Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَمَدٍ (Amad): Pillars or columns.
- مُمَدَّدَةٍ (Mumaddadah): Extended, stretched out, or lengthened.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the description of the fate of those who mock and belittle others through words and actions—those who amass wealth and count it endlessly, thinking it will grant them immortality. After mentioning that the Fire of Allah is kindled and that it leaps over the hearts, Allah describes its terrifying enclosure: the doors of this blazing Fire will be shut tightly upon them, and they will be bound within it by extended, towering pillars of iron and chains, stretched out to great lengths so that there is no escape and no way out. These pillars are not merely physical restraints but symbols of utter hopelessness—the inmates of Hell will be trapped beneath them, unable to move, unable to free themselves, and unable to find any relief from the torment. The imagery is one of complete confinement: a sealed prison with massive, unyielding columns that stretch endlessly, leaving no gap, no crack, and no possibility of deliverance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This vivid description is not meant to frighten for the sake of fear alone—it is a divine mercy in disguise. Allah, the Most Compassionate, warns us now so that we may never taste this reality. Imagine being trapped in a narrow, dark place with no exit, no hope, and no one to help—that is but a faint shadow of what awaits those who persist in arrogance, mockery, and greed. Yet the door of repentance is wide open in this life. Every breath you take is an opportunity to turn back to Allah, to purify your tongue from backbiting and ridicule, and to use your wealth for good rather than hoarding it with pride. The Qur'an is a light that guides you away from such a fate; embrace it, act upon it, and you will find instead gardens of delight, where no fear or sorrow shall touch you. Let this verse be a wake-up call—not to despair, but to change, for Allah's mercy is greater than His wrath, and His forgiveness encompasses all things for those who sincerely return to Him.
