Word Meanings:

  • Īlāf (إِيلَاف): The well-established habit, custom, or familiarity; the sense of security and ease that comes with a settled routine.
  • Quraysh (قُرَيْش): The prominent and respected tribe of Makkah, custodians of the Sacred House (the Ka'bah), from which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ descended.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse opens the short but profound Surah of Quraysh, and it draws our attention to a remarkable blessing that the tribe of Quraysh enjoyed—a blessing so great that Allah mentions it as a reason for gratitude and reflection.

The word "īlāf" refers to the deeply ingrained habit and familiarity that Quraysh had with their two major trade journeys: one in the winter to the lands of Yemen (in the south) and one in the summer to the lands of Syria/Sham (in the north). These journeys were not merely commercial ventures; they were a source of livelihood, security, and social stability for the tribe. Allah made these journeys safe, smooth, and prosperous, protecting them from the dangers of the desert, from bandits, and from the hostility of other tribes. This safety was itself a miracle of divine care, for the Arabs of that time were known for constant tribal warfare and raids—yet Quraysh passed through these routes unharmed, and their caravans were respected and protected wherever they went.

Moreover, the verse is connected to what comes before it in the previous Surah (Al-Fīl). Allah destroyed the army of the elephant—Abraha and his forces who came to destroy the Ka'bah—so that Quraysh might remain safe, united, and able to continue their way of life. The destruction of that mighty army was a sign of Allah's protection over His Sacred House and over the people who served it.

This verse is a call to reflect: Why did Allah grant Quraysh this unique security and ease? Was it merely for trade and wealth? No—it was so that they might recognize the Giver of these blessings, worship Him alone, and be grateful. The very next verse (which follows in this Surah) commands them: "So let them worship the Lord of this House." Thus, the blessing of safety and provision is directly linked to the purpose of worship and gratitude.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at how Allah, in His infinite mercy, reminds His servants of His blessings before asking anything of them. He does not burden Quraysh with commands before first reminding them of the ease and security He has granted them. This is the beautiful way of the Qur'an: it awakens the heart to gratitude, and gratitude naturally leads to love, and love leads to obedience.

Each one of us has our own "īlāf"—our own habits, routines, provisions, and securities that we often take for granted. The food on our table, the roof over our heads, the safety we enjoy in our lands, the ability to travel and work—all of these are from Allah alone. He asks us only to acknowledge Him, to worship Him, and to be thankful. When we realize that every blessing is from Him, our hearts soften, our faith deepens, and we draw closer to the One who has never stopped caring for us.

Let this verse be a mirror for your own life: count your blessings, and you will find that Allah's favors upon you are countless. And the greatest response to that favor is to turn to Him in sincere worship and gratitude—for He is the Lord of this House, and He is your Lord, your Provider, and your Protector.
