Word Meanings:
- "Eelafihim" (إِيلَافِهِمْ): Their familiarity, security, and accustomed ease in their journeys and trade.
- "Rihlah" (رِحْلَةَ): Journey or travel, specifically for trade and livelihood.
- "Al-Shita'" (الشِّتَاءِ): Winter.
- "Al-Sayf" (الصَّيْفِ): Summer.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse highlights the two well-established trade journeys of the Quraysh tribe, which were a sign of Allah's immense favor upon them. In winter, they would travel south to Yemen, a warmer region, to trade in goods suited for that climate. In summer, they would travel north to the Levant (Sham), a cooler and fertile land, to bring back provisions and merchandise. These journeys were not only profitable but also safe and unhindered—no tribe dared to attack or rob them, and they moved with honor and security wherever they went. This ease and protection were not accidental; they were a direct blessing from Allah, granted to them because of their custodianship of the Sacred House (the Kaaba). Their caravans passed through hostile territories, yet they were left unharmed, and their trade flourished, ensuring their prosperity and stability.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: the Quraysh were given this extraordinary security and provision simply because they served the House of Allah. They were not the most powerful or numerous tribe, yet their caravans moved like kings through the desert. This is a profound lesson for us all—when we honor Allah's commands and hold His sacred symbols in high regard, He grants us protection and provision from avenues we could never imagine. Today, you may not have caravans or trade routes, but your "journeys" are your daily struggles, your work, your family, and your faith. If you place Allah at the center of your life, He will secure your paths, ease your affairs, and bless your efforts beyond your expectations. The same Lord who protected the Quraysh for the sake of His House is your Lord today—call upon Him, trust in Him, and watch how He turns your winters and summers into seasons of blessing and peace. This is the beauty of Islam: it connects your daily bread to your relationship with your Creator. So, let your heart be attached to Allah, and He will never abandon you, just as He never abandoned the Quraysh in their journeys.
