Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:

O believers, Allah — in His infinite wisdom and mercy — sets a clear and profound criterion for marriage, which is one of the most important bonds in a person's life. He prohibits Muslim men from marrying polytheist women who worship idols or associate partners with Him, until such women embrace faith in Allah alone and enter the fold of Islam. This is because marriage is not merely a physical or emotional union; it is a spiritual partnership that shapes the home, the children, and the entire trajectory of a family's life.

Allah then draws attention to a powerful truth: a believing woman — even if she is a slave with no wealth, status, or lineage — is far better and more blessed as a life partner than a free, wealthy, and beautiful polytheist woman. Why? Because faith is the essence of a person's worth in the sight of Allah. A woman who fears Allah, loves His Messenger ﷺ, and strives to please her Lord brings light, tranquility, and barakah (blessing) into a home. In contrast, a polytheist woman — no matter how impressive her outward appearance or worldly advantages may be — lacks the very foundation that makes a marriage successful in the sight of Allah and beneficial for the Hereafter.

Similarly, Allah prohibits Muslim women from being married to polytheist men, and He prohibits guardians from giving their Muslim daughters or sisters in marriage to such men, until those men sincerely believe in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. A believing slave — even if he is poor and of humble social standing — is better than a free, wealthy, or influential polytheist man. The criterion is not wealth, beauty, or status; it is faith, character, and the fear of Allah.

Then Allah explains the underlying reason for this ruling: polytheists — whether men or women — invite those around them, through their words, actions, and lifestyle, toward the path that leads to the Fire. Their company, values, and worldview pull a person away from obedience to Allah and toward disbelief and sin. On the other hand, Allah — through His messengers and His guidance — invites His servants to Paradise and to the forgiveness of sins. He calls them to faith, righteousness, and every deed that leads to eternal bliss.

Finally, Allah — out of His immense mercy — does not leave His servants in confusion. He clearly explains His signs, His commands, and His prohibitions so that people may reflect, remember, and take heed. He wants what is best for His creation, and His laws are designed to protect the believer's faith, family, and future — both in this world and the next.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful demonstration of Allah's care for His believing servants. He does not simply forbid something; He explains the wisdom behind it and offers a better alternative. Islam elevates the value of a human being based on their faith and piety, not on their wealth, race, or social rank. Imagine the dignity this gives to every believer — regardless of their worldly status — when Allah Himself declares that a believing slave is better than a free polytheist!

This teaching also protects the Muslim family from disintegration and spiritual loss. A home built on faith is a fortress against the whispers of Shaytan and the temptations of this world. It is a place where children are raised upon the love of Allah, where spouses support each other in obedience, and where the peace of the Qur'an descends.

So, dear reader, when you choose a spouse — or when you guide your children in this choice — let faith be the first and foremost criterion. Do not be dazzled by outward appearances, wealth, or lineage. Look for the heart that beats with love for Allah, the tongue that remembers Him, and the character that follows His Messenger ﷺ. That is the true treasure, and that is the path to a blessed life in this world and the Hereafter. Allah's invitation is open to all — He calls you to Paradise and forgiveness.
