Tafsir (Explanation):
The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, asked the Prophet ﷺ about the ruling on approaching one's wife during her menstrual period. In response, Allah revealed this verse to guide the believers with clarity and wisdom.
Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to answer: "It is harm" — meaning that menstrual blood is an impurity that causes physical and spiritual discomfort to both spouses. Therefore, Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, prohibited sexual intercourse during this time to protect the health, dignity, and spiritual well-being of both partners.
The command follows: "So keep away from women during menstruation" — meaning abstain from sexual relations entirely during this period. "And do not approach them until they become pure" — meaning until the bleeding stops completely. Once the bleeding ceases and they purify themselves with a full ritual bath (ghusl), then "come to them from where Allah has commanded you" — that is, through the natural, lawful place (the front passage), while they are pure and clean.
This ruling reflects the profound wisdom of Islamic law — it neither imposes hardship nor permits transgression. It balances physical needs with spiritual cleanliness, and marital intimacy with divine obedience.
The verse concludes with a beautiful and encouraging statement: "Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves." This is a call to every believer — when you fall short or make mistakes, turn back to Allah in sincere repentance, and He will love you. When you purify your bodies and your hearts, you draw closer to His love and pleasure.
Islam is a religion of purity — purity of the body, the soul, and the heart. This verse teaches us that even in the most intimate aspects of life, we are guided by divine wisdom that protects us from harm and leads us to what is clean, lawful, and blessed.
So, dear believer, embrace these teachings with an open heart. Know that every command of Allah is for your benefit — in this life and the next. And rejoice in the glad tidings that Allah loves those who repent and those who purify themselves. Strive to be among them, and you will find His love and mercy encompassing you.
