Tafsir (Explanation):
Would any of you truly wish to have a magnificent garden—filled with date palms and grapevines, with rivers flowing gently beneath its trees, and abundant fruits of every kind—only to reach old age, frail and dependent, with young, helpless children who cannot fend for themselves, and then have that very garden struck by a fiery whirlwind that burns it all to ashes? What a devastating loss that would be! This vivid parable is drawn by Allah to illustrate the fate of those who give charity or do good deeds purely for show, seeking the praise of people rather than the pleasure of Allah. On the Day of Judgment, when they are most in need of their good deeds, they will find nothing—their deeds vanish like that garden, leaving them empty-handed and in utter despair.
The lesson here is profound: sincerity (ikhlāṣ) is the soul of every good deed. Just as the elderly man in the parable depended entirely on his garden for his livelihood and the well-being of his weak children, so too does every human being depend on their deeds in the Hereafter. If those deeds are not rooted in sincere faith and pure intention for Allah alone, they will be destroyed by the "fire" of hypocrisy and show-off, leaving nothing but regret.
Allah presents this example so clearly and vividly, using imagery that resonates with human experience, so that we may reflect deeply. He does not want us to fall into this trap. He wants us to purify our intentions, to give and act for His sake alone, and to build a lasting treasure that will benefit us when we need it most—on the Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except for one who comes to Allah with a pure heart.
Reflect, then, on your own deeds: Are you building a garden that will survive the storms of this world and the fire of the Hereafter? Or are you building one that will burn away when you need it most? Allah, in His infinite mercy, has shown us the way—so let us walk it with sincerity, for He is the Most Generous, the Most Compassionate, and He loves those who are sincere.
