Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah commands you to strive in His cause with a striving that is truly worthy of Him—a struggle that is pure, sincere, and directed solely toward His pleasure. This jihad is not limited to the battlefield; it is the jihad of the soul against its low desires, the jihad of the tongue in speaking truth, the jihad of wealth in spending for good, and the jihad of the heart in remaining steadfast upon faith. It is a call to invite others to His path with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and to stand firm in establishing His religion on earth.
Allah then reminds you of His immense favor: He has chosen you for this noble mission. He has not placed upon you any hardship or constriction in the religion—no unbearable burdens, no impossible demands. Unlike the severe obligations placed upon previous nations, this faith is one of ease and mercy. It is the path of your father Ibrahim (peace be upon him)—the upright, monotheistic way that avoids both extremism and negligence. Allah Himself named you "Muslims" in the earlier scriptures and in this Qur’an, granting you this honorable identity before you even existed.
This selection and naming carry a profound purpose: so that the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be a witness over you on the Day of Judgment that he delivered the message, and so that you, in turn, will be witnesses over all of humanity that the messengers of Allah conveyed their messages truthfully. What a tremendous honor and responsibility!
So, in gratitude for this divine favor, establish the prayer perfectly with all its conditions and pillars, give the obligatory charity (zakat) from your wealth, and hold fast to Allah alone—trusting in Him, relying on Him, and seeking His protection in all your affairs. He is your Mawla—your Guardian and Protector who manages your affairs with perfect wisdom. What an excellent Protector He is, and what an excellent Helper who grants you victory when you seek His aid. Whoever takes Allah as their protector will never be forsaken, and whoever seeks His help will never be defeated.
