📖 English Meaning
So is one whose breast Allah has expanded to [accept] Islam and he is upon a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah. Those are in manifest error.

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Sharaha (شَرَحَ): To expand, open, or widen.
  • Sadrahu (صَدْرَهُ): His chest or heart — metaphorically, the seat of understanding and receptivity.
  • Noor (نُورٍ): Light — here meaning divine guidance, clarity, and insight.
  • Qaasiyah (الْقَاسِيَةِ): Hardened — hearts that have become rigid, unyielding, and impervious to truth.
  • Dhikr Allah (ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ): The remembrance of Allah — including the Qur'an, admonition, and all forms of invoking Him.
  • Dalal Mubeen (ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ): Clear, manifest, and unmistakable error or misguidance.

The Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse draws a powerful contrast between two types of people, inviting the reader to reflect deeply on the state of their own heart.

Allah asks: Is the one whose chest Allah has expanded for Islam — opening it wide to receive the truth, making him receptive to faith, eager to submit, and at peace with the religion — like the one whose heart is sealed and hardened? Can these two ever be equal? Absolutely not.

The first person walks upon a radiant light from his Lord. This light illuminates his path, clarifies his vision, and gives him certainty in every step. He sees life through the lens of divine guidance — his decisions are sound, his priorities are clear, and his soul is tranquil. This is the ultimate blessing: a heart that welcomes Islam and a life that reflects its beauty.

Then the verse turns to the opposite state — a warning that strikes fear into every sincere soul. Woe — destruction and loss — to those whose hearts have become hardened against the remembrance of Allah. When they hear the Qur'an, when they are reminded of their Creator, when truth is presented to them, their hearts do not soften; they only grow more rigid and distant. They are not moved by the verses that melt other hearts, nor by the warnings that shake other souls.

These people, the verse concludes, are in clear, manifest misguidance. Their error is not hidden or ambiguous — it is evident in their coldness toward divine truth, their aversion to remembrance, and their stubborn refusal to submit.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and examine your own heart. Is it open and receptive to the light of Islam? Do you feel joy when you hear the Qur'an? Does your heart soften when you remember Allah? Does your soul long for closeness to Him?

If so, thank Allah for this immense blessing — for He has chosen to expand your chest and illuminate your path. Guard this gift with gratitude, and let that light shine through your words, actions, and character.

And if you sense any hardness in your heart — any coldness toward worship, any reluctance to obey, any discomfort with the truth — know that this is a serious spiritual ailment. But the door of mercy is wide open. Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, seek His forgiveness, and ask Him to soften your heart. Recite the Qur'an with reflection, engage in His remembrance, and surround yourself with righteous company. For the heart that was once hard can become soft again by the grace of the One who holds all hearts in His Hand.

Do not let yourself be among those who are described with woe. Choose today to be among the people of light — those whose hearts are open to Islam, who walk upon guidance from their Lord, and who will find peace in this life and the next. The path is clear, the light is shining, and the call is being made: come to the remembrance of Allah, and let your heart find its rest.

📜 Verse 20-24 — Az-Zumar

But those who have feared their Lord - for them are chambers, above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow. [This is] the promise of Allah. Allah does not fail in [His] promise.
Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.
So is one whose breast Allah has expanded to [accept] Islam and he is upon a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah. Those are in manifest error.
Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide.
Then is he who will shield with his face the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection [like one secure from it]? And it will be said to the wrongdoers, "Taste what you used to earn."
