Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, miracle, or clear proof demonstrating the truth of the Prophet’s message.
- Yuʿriḍū (يُعْرِضُوا): They turn away, reject, and disregard it with aversion.
- Siḥrun mustamirr (سِحْرٌ مُسْتَمِرّ): Magic that is "continuous" or "passing away"—interpreted by scholars as either magic that is transient and will soon vanish, or magic that is intense and persistent in its falsehood.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes the stubbornness of the disbelievers of Quraysh when confronted with undeniable proofs of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) truthfulness. Whenever they witnessed a clear sign—such as the splitting of the moon, which was a magnificent, visible miracle—they did not reflect or submit. Instead, they turned away in arrogance and dismissed it with the claim: "This is merely magic that will pass away" or "magic that is persistent in its deception."
Their reaction reveals a heart sealed against guidance: no matter how brilliant the evidence, they refused to accept it because their pride and attachment to falsehood blinded them. They labeled the truth as sorcery to justify their rejection, even though the miracle was beyond human capability and clearly bore the stamp of divine power. The phrase "mustamirr" carries a dual nuance—it suggests both that they thought the "magic" would fade away (so they need not take it seriously) and that they accused it of being an unrelenting trick to discredit the Prophet’s mission. Either way, their words were a feeble excuse to avoid submission to Allah.
Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse serves as a timeless reminder for every seeker of truth: the heart’s condition determines how one responds to divine signs. The disbelievers saw the moon split before their very eyes, yet they still denied it—proving that faith is not merely about witnessing miracles, but about humility and sincerity before Allah. For us today, the greatest miracle is the Qur’an itself, preserved and unchallenged for over 1,400 years. Do we turn away from its verses when they call us to righteousness, or do we embrace them with open hearts? Let this verse inspire you to be among those who, when they see a sign of Allah, hasten to believe and act—not among those who make excuses. The Qur’an is not magic; it is the living word of your Creator, inviting you to eternal success. Respond to it with love, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
