They asked him to show them a miracle, and by the will and power of Allah, the moon was cleft into two distinct parts before their very eyes — a clear, physical evidence of Allah’s absolute power and the truthfulness of His Messenger.

This splitting was not a mere illusion or trick; it was a real, witnessed event that occurred at the Prophet’s supplication to his Lord. The people of Makkah saw the moon divided, with one part appearing on one side of the mountain and the other part on the other side, and then it returned to its original state. Despite this overwhelming sign, the disbelievers stubbornly dismissed it as “continuous magic,” refusing to submit to the truth.

The verse begins with the approach of the Hour to remind humanity that this worldly life is transient and that the final reckoning is inevitable. The splitting of the moon serves as a forewarning and a proof: just as the moon — a massive celestial body — was split by Allah’s command, so too will the entire universe be transformed and the Hour will come to pass. Let this verse be a reminder to prepare for that Day, to return to Allah in repentance, and to embrace the light of faith before the light of this world fades. The Qur’an itself challenges: “And they say, ‘If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land.’ Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which fruits of all kinds are brought as provision from Us? But most of them do not know” (28:57). Indeed, the signs are clear — the question is whether we will open our eyes and hearts to them.
