Word Meanings:
- ʿatat (عَتَتْ): To transgress, rebel, or arrogantly exceed the bounds of obedience.
- ḥisāban shadīdan (حِسَابًا شَدِيدًا): A severe and rigorous reckoning, where no shortcoming is overlooked.
- ʿadhāban nukran (عَذَابًا نُكْرًا): A dreadful, unprecedented, and horrifying punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
How many towns and civilizations—past and present—have defied the command of their Lord and the commands of His messengers! Their people grew arrogant, turned away from the truth, and persisted in their rebellion and disbelief. They thought their power and wealth would protect them, but they were gravely mistaken.
When their transgression reached its peak, Allah brought them to account with a reckoning so severe that no sin was left unpunished, no deed was left unexamined. He then seized them with a punishment so terrible and unfamiliar that it stunned the senses—a torment unlike anything they had ever imagined or experienced. They tasted the bitter fruits of their own arrogance and defiance, and their ultimate end was utter ruin and loss—a loss beyond any worldly failure.
This verse serves as a timeless warning: no nation, however mighty, is beyond Allah’s reach. The same fate awaits those who persist in rebellion against their Creator. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah mentions this not to terrify alone, but to awaken hearts. He is swift in punishment, but He is also the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. The door of repentance remains open for every soul that turns back to Him before the reckoning comes.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse stir your heart. The stories of past nations are not mere tales—they are lessons carved in history for us to ponder. Allah does not delight in destruction; He delights in the return of His servants. If you find yourself drifting from His commands, know that His mercy is vast, and His door is open. Return to Him today, before the account becomes severe. Seek His forgiveness, and you will find Him ever-ready to pardon. For He who destroyed the arrogant is the same Lord who embraces the repentant with boundless love and grace.
