📖 English Meaning
And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah, so will you not use reason?

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Khalaf" (خَلْفٌ): A succession of people who come after others. Here, it refers to a generation of evildoers who replaced the righteous predecessors.
  • "Warithu al-Kitab" (وَرِثُوا الْكِتَابَ): They inherited the Book (the Torah) from their forefathers, meaning they received it and were entrusted with its knowledge.
  • "Arad" (عَرَضَ): The transient, perishable goods of this worldly life—often referring to base or illicit gains, such as bribes.
  • "Al-Adna" (الْأَدْنَى): The lower, meaner, or more contemptible things—referring to the fleeting and inferior pleasures of this world.
  • "Mithaq" (مِيثَاقُ): A solemn covenant or binding pledge.
  • "Darasu" (دَرَسُوا): They studied, read, and learned thoroughly.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the righteous people who upheld the truth, there came a corrupt generation among the Children of Israel. They inherited the Torah, read it, and knew its teachings well—yet they betrayed its essence. They took the base, fleeting gains of this worldly life, such as bribes and illicit earnings, and used them to distort the divine message for their own benefit. They would say, "Our sins will surely be forgiven," harboring false hopes and wishful thinking, as if they had a guarantee of Allah's mercy while persisting in wrongdoing. And if another opportunity for such worldly gain came their way, they would seize it again without hesitation, repeating their sins without genuine repentance.

Did they not make a solemn covenant through the Book itself—the Torah—that they would not say anything about Allah except the truth? Did they not pledge to follow His commandments and refrain from falsehood? They had studied the Book and knew exactly what it contained, yet they deliberately ignored its injunctions and broke their covenant. Their sin was not born of ignorance but of willful defiance.

The Hereafter, with its eternal bliss and everlasting rewards, is far better for those who are mindful of Allah—those who obey His commands and avoid His prohibitions. The fleeting pleasures of this world, no matter how alluring, are nothing compared to the enduring goodness that awaits the righteous. So will you not use your reason, O people, to see that what Allah has prepared for the pious is infinitely superior and more lasting than the temporary trinkets of this life?

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse is a timeless reminder for every believer. It warns us against the dangerous trap of complacency—thinking that we can sin freely and still be forgiven without sincere repentance. Allah's mercy is vast, but it is granted to those who turn back to Him with genuine hearts, not to those who take His forgiveness as a license to persist in disobedience.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to live a life of integrity and mindfulness. The world offers you glittering temptations, but they are like a mirage that vanishes when you reach for it. The Hereafter, however, is the true reality—a place where every good deed is multiplied and every sin is accounted for. Choose the path of taqwa (God-consciousness), for it leads to eternal success. Do not be like those who knew the truth yet abandoned it; instead, be among those who not only read the Book but live by it, seeking Allah's pleasure above all else. Reflect, and let your intellect guide you to what is truly best for your soul.

📜 Verse 167-171 — Al-A'raf

And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].
But those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.
And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them, [and Allah said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allah."
