Surah Al-Muddaththir — Verse 39

• أصحاب اليمين (Ashab al-Yamin): The people of the right hand — the righteous believers who receive their Book of Deeds in their right hand on the Day of Judgment, symbolizing success and salvation.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as an exception to what precedes it, where Allah states that every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned — meaning that every person is accountable for their deeds and will be recompensed accordingly. However, Allah makes an exception here: "Except the people of the right hand."

These are the sincere believers — those who fulfilled their obligations to Allah and to His creation, who performed the obligatory acts of worship, avoided what He prohibited, and lived their lives in obedience to Him. They are the ones who will be freed from the pledge of accountability because of their faith and righteous deeds. Their good works will weigh heavily on the scales, and Allah, in His mercy, will forgive their shortcomings and admit them into Paradise.

The "people of the right hand" are those who will receive their records in their right hands — a sign of honor and success. They are the ones who prayed, gave charity, believed in the Day of Judgment, and kept away from falsehood and idle talk. Because of this, they are saved from the punishment that awaits the wicked.

Strive today to be among the people of the right hand, and you will find Allah's mercy greater than your sins.
