📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kullu nafsin — Every soul, every person.
  • Bimā kasabat — By what it has earned, meaning the deeds it has committed in life.
  • Rahīnah — Pledged, held in pledge, bound to its deeds.

Explanation of the Verse:

This profound verse establishes a universal and unshakable principle: every soul is held as a pledge against its own deeds. Just as a valuable item is placed as collateral for a debt, so too is every person bound to what they have done in this life. No soul is exempt from this divine accountability.

The meaning here is that a person's deeds are not merely recorded and set aside — they become an inseparable part of that person's destiny. If one's deeds are righteous, they act as a means of liberation, freeing the soul from the fire of punishment and elevating it to eternal bliss. If one's deeds are evil, they become a heavy burden that drags the soul into ruin and destruction.

This is a beautiful and powerful reminder that we are not victims of fate, but masters of our own destiny through the choices we make. Every prayer, every act of kindness, every moment of patience, every word of truth — all of it accumulates as a treasure that will one day ransom our souls from the terrors of the Hereafter. Conversely, every sin, every act of injustice, every neglect of duty — all of it becomes a chain that binds us until we are held to account.

The verse carries within it both a warning and an invitation. The warning is clear: no one can escape the consequences of their actions, and no one can carry another's burden. The invitation is equally clear: the door of salvation is open, and every good deed we perform today is an investment in our eternal freedom. As long as we are alive, we have the opportunity to fill our scales with goodness, to free ourselves from the pledge, and to secure our place in the gardens of delight.

This verse should awaken in every believer a sense of personal responsibility and urgency. It teaches us that our relationship with Allah is built on sincerity and action, not on empty claims. Let us therefore race towards good deeds, purify our intentions, and strive to be among those whose deeds will testify in their favor on the Day when every soul shall be recompensed for what it has earned.

36نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ
As a warning to humanity -
37لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.
38كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained
39إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ
Except the companions of the right,
40فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
