Word Meanings:

  • Barā’ah (بَرَاءَةٌ): A declaration of disassociation, freedom from, or termination of an obligation or covenant.
  • Min Allāh wa Rasūlihī (مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ): From Allah and His Messenger — indicating that this declaration carries divine authority and is issued by the Messenger as Allah’s representative.
  • Ilā alladhīna (إِلَى الَّذِينَ): To those — specifying the addressees of this declaration.
  • ʿĀhadtum (عَاهَدتُّم): You (the believers) made a treaty or covenant with.
  • Al-Mushrikīn (الْمُشْرِكِينَ): The polytheists — those who associate partners with Allah in worship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse opens Surah At-Tawbah with a powerful and decisive proclamation: a declaration of disassociation from Allah and His Messenger to those polytheists with whom the Muslims had entered into treaties. It is a clear, unequivocal announcement that the covenants previously established with the idolaters — particularly in the Arabian Peninsula — are now terminated. The word *barā’ah* carries the sense of complete severance and liberation from any obligation, signaling that Allah and His Messenger are free from those agreements due to the polytheists’ repeated violations and treachery.

The verse addresses the believers directly: “to those with whom you made a treaty.” This highlights that the treaties were made by the Muslim community, but now Allah Himself — the ultimate authority — declares them void. This is not a unilateral decision by the Muslims, but a divine ruling that overrides all human arrangements. The polytheists had broken their pledges, aided enemies against the Muslims, and persisted in their hostility, so the declaration serves as both a legal termination and a moral justification for what follows.

This is a moment of profound clarity for the believers: their loyalty belongs to Allah and His Messenger above all else. The verse teaches that treaties and alliances in this world are valid only when they are honored with sincerity and justice. When the other party violates the terms, the believers are not bound by false promises or empty words. However, as the following verses will show, this declaration was accompanied by a period of grace — the polytheists were given four months to reconsider, repent, or prepare for consequences. This reflects the mercy and fairness of Islam even in times of conflict.

Da‘wah (Call to Allah):

Beloved reader, this verse is a reminder of the greatness of Allah’s justice and His care for His believing servants. Imagine the strength and honor that comes from knowing that your covenant is with Allah — the One who never breaks His promise. When you submit to Him, you are never abandoned, never betrayed. The polytheists of that time had every chance to honor their agreements, but they chose treachery; so Allah, in His wisdom, freed the believers from those bonds. This teaches us a beautiful lesson: in our own lives, we must be people of integrity who honor our promises, but we must also never cling to relationships or agreements that are built on deceit and betrayal. Allah always provides a way out for those who trust Him. He is the Best of Planners, and His guidance is a light that leads us from darkness to clarity. Let this verse inspire you to place your complete trust in Allah, for He is the One who protects His allies and never lets them down.

📜 Verse 1-3 — At-Tawbah

1بَرَاءَةٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ إِلَى الَّذِينَ عَاهَدتُّم مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allah and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.
So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allah and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers.
And [it is] an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allah. And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.
