Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ishtarā (اشترى): Bought or purchased — a metaphor for the noble exchange Allah makes with His believing servants.
- Anfusahum (أنفسهم): Their very selves, their lives, their souls.
- Amwālahum (وأموالهم): Their wealth and possessions.
- Fī sabīlillāh (في سبيل الله): In the path of Allah — striving to elevate His word, establish His religion, and defend the truth.
- Yaqtulūn wa yuqtalūn (فيقتلون ويقتلون): They kill (the enemies of Allah) and are killed (as martyrs) — a description of the ultimate sacrifice in jihad.
- Waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan (وعدًا عليه حقًّا): A promise binding upon Him, true and certain — not subject to failure or change.
- Fawz al-ʿaẓīm (الفوز العظيم): The supreme triumph, the greatest success that surpasses every worldly gain.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah — in His infinite mercy and generosity — announces a magnificent transaction: He has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth, and in exchange, He grants them Paradise. Reflect on this: the Creator and Owner of all things, who already possesses everything, chooses to "buy" what is rightfully His, as an honor and a gift to His servants. He does not need our souls or our money; rather, He opens the door for us to trade our fleeting worldly existence for an eternal bliss that never ends.
The nature of this transaction is clarified: the believers fight in the cause of Allah, striving to make His word supreme and His religion manifest. They give their lives in this noble struggle — sometimes they are the ones who overcome the enemies of truth, and sometimes they are martyred in the field. Either way, they are winners: if they live, they live with honor and purpose; if they die, they die as martyrs whose place in Paradise is guaranteed. There is no loss in this deal, only gain upon gain.
This promise is not a new or arbitrary one. Allah made it a binding, true promise in the Torah revealed to Moses, in the Gospel revealed to Jesus, and in the Qur'an revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him). This shows the continuity of the divine message: jihad — striving in the path of Allah — was prescribed in every divine law, and the reward of Paradise for those who sacrifice was always part of Allah's covenant with His righteous servants.
Then Allah poses a rhetorical question: "Who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah?" The answer is obvious — no one. When Allah makes a promise, He fulfills it completely and perfectly. He does not break His word, nor does He reduce the reward. So the believers are commanded: "Rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted!" This is a call to celebrate, to feel deep joy and satisfaction, knowing that they have traded something perishable for something everlasting, something limited for something boundless.
And this — this very transaction — is the supreme triumph. It is the ultimate success that dwarfs every worldly achievement. Kings may boast of their kingdoms, and the wealthy may boast of their riches, but the believer who sells his soul and wealth to Allah has secured a treasure that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at how Allah addresses you in this verse. He does not command you to give — He invites you to trade. He does not take from you — He buys from you, and He pays the most generous price: Paradise. This is the deal of a lifetime, and it is open to every believer until the final hour. You do not need to be a scholar or a warrior to enter this transaction; you simply need sincere faith and a willingness to spend your life and your wealth in what pleases Allah. Every prayer you offer, every charity you give, every good word you speak, every step you take toward goodness — all of it is part of this blessed trade. So rejoice, for you are in a business that never fails, with a Lord who never breaks His promise. This is the path to true success — the success that begins in this world and continues forever in the Hereafter.
