Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rībah (رِيبَةً): Doubt, suspicion, or hypocrisy that unsettles the heart.
- Taqattaʿa (تَقَطَّعَ): To be cut apart or torn asunder—here, referring to the heart being severed from life or from the capacity to perceive truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to expose the reality of the hypocrites who built a mosque with the sole intention of causing harm, spreading disbelief, and dividing the believers. Allah informs us that this structure—the one they erected with such effort—will never cease to be a source of doubt and hypocrisy lodged firmly within their hearts. It will remain there, festering, until their hearts are literally torn apart by death, by the sword, or by a profound repentance that shatters their arrogance and turns them back to their Lord in utter humility.
The verse emphasizes that their building was not merely an architectural endeavor; it was a monument to their inner corruption. Even after the Prophet ﷺ ordered its demolition, the stain of that act remained etched upon their souls, deepening their resolve in hypocrisy rather than softening it. Their hearts became so hardened that they lost the very capacity to perceive guidance—until the moment their hearts would be cut asunder, either by the finality of death or by a repentance so intense it would break them completely.
And Allah—who knows every hidden intention and every secret motive—is All-Knowing of what lies within their breasts. He is All-Wise in His decree, having commanded the demolition of that structure as a mercy to the believers and a purification of the sacred precincts of worship.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. How often do we build things—structures, reputations, or even relationships—upon foundations of insincerity? The hypocrites built a mosque, a place of worship, yet their hearts were filled with poison. Allah did not accept their outward deeds because their intentions were corrupt. This teaches us a profound lesson: the value of any action lies not in its outward form, but in the purity of the heart behind it.
Islam invites you to purify your intentions, to build your life upon the bedrock of sincerity to Allah. When your heart is sound, your deeds become light upon light. When it is corrupt, even the most sacred acts become a source of darkness. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart—to tear down any "building" of hypocrisy within you before it becomes a permanent source of doubt. Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, for He is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful, and He loves those who purify themselves. The door of repentance is open until the moment your heart is cut asunder—so do not delay, and let today be the day you rebuild your life upon truth and sincerity.
