Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse establishes a profound and timeless principle for the Muslim community—a principle of balance, specialization, and collective responsibility. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, teaches that it is not fitting for all believers to go out at once for battle or expedition, leaving no one behind to tend to other essential duties. Neither is it proper for all to remain behind. Rather, a strategic division of roles is required.
When the Prophet ﷺ dispatched military expeditions, some Muslims would rush to join, leaving him alone in Madinah. Allah revealed this verse to correct that approach: a group from each division should go forth to fight and defend the faith, while another group should remain with the Prophet ﷺ to learn the Quran, the Sunnah, and the intricacies of the religion. This remaining group is the one referred to in the phrase "to gain deep understanding in the religion" (li-yatafaqqahū fi al-dīn).
Then, when the fighters return from their expedition, those who remained behind should warn them and teach them what they have learned—not to shame them, but to complete their knowledge and remind them of what they might have missed. The purpose is that all may become cautious of Allah's punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
This verse beautifully illustrates that seeking religious knowledge is a communal obligation (farḍ kifāyah)—if a sufficient number undertake it, the rest are absolved, but if none do, the entire community bears the sin. It also highlights the complementary nature of jihad with the sword and jihad with knowledge. Both are needed: one defends the borders, the other preserves the faith and enlightens hearts.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, see how beautifully Islam balances your life! It does not ask you to abandon the world for worship alone, nor to chase the world while neglecting your soul. It teaches you that the Ummah is like one body—some go out to protect, others stay to teach, and together they complete one another. When you seek knowledge of your religion, you are not just fulfilling a duty; you are becoming a source of light for others. And when you return to your community with that knowledge, you are following the very example set by the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Let this verse inspire you to ask: *What role can I play today?* Perhaps you cannot fight, but you can learn. Perhaps you cannot teach, but you can support. Every role is noble when done for Allah's sake. May Allah make us among those who learn, teach, and warn with sincerity—and may He protect us from heedlessness.
