Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, reminds the believers of His countless acts of divine support and victory granted to them across numerous battlefields—such as Badr, the conquest of Mecca, and the campaigns against Banu Qurayzah and Banu al-Nadir. In all these moments, victory came not from their own strength or numbers, but from their sincere reliance upon Allah and their adherence to the proper means and causes.
Then, Allah turns their attention to the pivotal lesson of the Battle of Hunayn. On that day, the believers looked at their vast numbers and felt a surge of pride and overconfidence, saying, "We will not be defeated today due to our great multitude!" But this self-admiration became the very cause of their trial. Their numbers did not benefit them at all—instead, the enemy overwhelmed them, and the earth, despite its spaciousness, seemed to close in on them. They found no refuge, no shelter, and no escape, and they turned their backs in retreat, fleeing from the battlefield.
This verse carries a profound and timeless lesson for every believer: victory and success come solely from Allah, not from numbers, resources, or personal abilities. When a person becomes arrogant and relies on their own strength, Allah may allow them to experience hardship to remind them of their utter dependence upon Him. Yet, even in this moment of weakness and defeat, Allah’s mercy was near—He did not abandon His believing servants, but rather taught them a lesson that would purify their hearts and strengthen their faith for the trials ahead.
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Never let your achievements, wealth, or abilities make you forget that every blessing you possess is a gift from Allah. Humble yourself before Him, rely on Him in all your affairs, and know that true strength lies not in what you have, but in your connection to the One who grants victory and honor to whom He wills. When you place your complete trust in Allah, He will never leave you alone—even when the world seems to close in on you, His mercy will open doors you never imagined.
