Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- عَشِيرَتُكُمْ (ʿAshīratukum): Your close relatives, clan, or tribe — those to whom you feel a deep sense of belonging and loyalty.
- اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا (Iqtaraftumūhā): Wealth you have earned, acquired, and accumulated through your own efforts.
- تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا (Takhshawna kasādahā): A trade or business whose failure or decline you fear — you worry about losing your investment.
- تَرْضَوْنَهَا (Tarḍawnahā): Homes and dwellings that bring you comfort and delight, where you find peace and satisfaction.
- فَتَرَبَّصُوا (Fatarabbaṣū): Then wait — an ominous command carrying a warning of impending consequence.
- الْفَاسِقِينَ (Al-Fāsiqīn): Those who defiantly step outside the bounds of obedience to Allah — the rebellious and disobedient.
The Interpretation:
O Messenger, tell the believers clearly: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your extended family, the wealth you have painstakingly gathered, the business you fear might fail, and the beautiful homes you take pleasure in — if all of these are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and striving in His cause, then do not expect honor or victory. Instead, wait — wait for Allah’s decree to unfold, and His punishment to descend upon you.
This verse strikes at the very heart of human attachment. It does not demand that you abandon love for your family or detach from worldly blessings — rather, it asks a profound question: *Where does your ultimate loyalty lie?* When the call of faith conflicts with the pull of comfort, which do you choose? When standing for truth costs you your business, your home, or even your relationships, what prevails?
The verse warns that those who place worldly attachments above their commitment to Allah and His Messenger will face a painful reckoning. And it closes with a sobering truth: Allah does not guide those who deliberately choose disobedience — not because He withholds guidance arbitrarily, but because their hearts have turned away from the light, preferring the fleeting over the eternal.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, pause and examine your heart. It is not wrong to love your family, to enjoy your wealth, or to take comfort in your home — these are blessings from Allah. But let them never become veils between you and your Creator. When the love of the world outweighs the love of Allah, the soul begins to wither, and the path to true success becomes obscured.
The Prophet ﷺ said: *"None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all of humanity."* This is the standard of faith — a love that transforms priorities, elevates intentions, and makes sacrifice for the sake of Allah not a burden, but a joy.
So ask yourself today: If you had to choose between your comfort and your faith, which would you protect? The answer to that question reveals the state of your heart. And know that when you place Allah first, He does not abandon you — He replaces what you give up with something far greater, and grants you a peace that no amount of wealth or status can provide.
