Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah (Glorious is He) declares a timeless truth: the number of months in His divine decree and in the Book He has written—the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ)—is exactly twelve, from the very day He created the heavens and the earth. This is not a human invention or a matter of convention; it is a fixed, divine order established at the dawn of creation, when Allah set the celestial systems and the lunar calendar into motion. The months are counted by the moon's cycles, a sign of His wisdom and precision.
From these twelve months, Allah singled out four as sacred and inviolable (*ḥurum*). These are: Dhul-Qaʿdah, Dhul-Ḥijjah, Muḥarram, and Rajab. In these months, fighting was originally forbidden, and their sanctity was to be honored and preserved. This was the practice of Prophet Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) and continued until the time of the final revelation, when Allah re-established the true calendar and abolished the pagan practice of *al-nasīʾ* (intercalation, the manipulation of months to suit worldly interests).
Allah then states: "That is the upright religion" — meaning that this system of counting months and honoring the sacred ones is the correct, straight path that aligns with divine law and human well-being. It is a call to return to the original, unaltered order of Allah, free from human tampering.
The verse then issues a powerful command: "Do not wrong yourselves therein" — i.e., during these sacred months. While injustice and sin are forbidden at all times, their gravity is magnified in these blessed months. The believer is thus urged to be extra vigilant in guarding their conduct—avoiding oppression, aggression, and transgression—not because sin is permissible elsewhere, but because the sanctity of these months demands heightened awareness and reverence.
Finally, Allah commands the believers: "And fight the polytheists collectively, as they fight you collectively" — a directive to confront the enemies of Islam with unity and resolve, just as they unite against the Muslims. This establishes the principle of collective defense and proportionate response. The verse concludes with a profound reassurance: "And know that Allah is with the righteous" — those who truly fear Him, obey His commands, and avoid His prohibitions. His support, victory, and protection are guaranteed for them.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a magnificent reminder of Allah's absolute sovereignty over time and creation. The twelve months, the sacred four, the alternation of day and night—all are signs of His perfect order. When you align your life with this divine rhythm, you are not merely following rules; you are connecting with the very fabric of existence.
Honor these sacred months by increasing your good deeds, seeking forgiveness, and avoiding all forms of wrongdoing. Let this verse inspire you to be among the *muttaqīn* — those whom Allah accompanies with His care and victory. And when the time calls for defending the truth, do so with unity and courage, knowing that Allah is with those who are conscious of Him. This is the path of honor in this life and the next. May Allah make us among the righteous and steadfast.
