Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse addresses a grave practice of the pre-Islamic Arabs known as *an-nasee’*—the manipulation of the sacred months. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, decreed that four months of the lunar year are sacred: Dhul-Qa‘dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. During these months, fighting was forbidden to preserve peace and enable people to perform pilgrimage and worship in safety.
However, the disbelievers of that era, driven by their desires and love of power, would alter this divine system. When they found it inconvenient to refrain from fighting during a sacred month—due to tribal conflicts or economic pressures—they would simply declare that month permissible and transfer its sanctity to another month that suited them better. They did this arbitrarily, changing their decisions year after year: one year they would honor the sacred month, and the next they would violate it, replacing it with a different month.
Allah describes this act as "an increase in disbelief"—because it was not merely a sin, but a deliberate distortion of Allah’s law. They were not content with disbelieving in Allah; they went further by tampering with His commandments, claiming authority to decide what is sacred and what is not. This was a rebellion against divine legislation itself.
The verse reveals that Satan beautified this evil practice in their eyes, making it seem reasonable and justified. They thought they were being clever by maintaining the *number* of sacred months (four) while changing their *identity*—so they could claim they were still honoring Allah’s decree while actually violating it. But Allah, the All-Knowing, exposed their deception and declared that He does not guide those who persist in disbelief and corruption.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the wisdom of this verse. It teaches us that Allah’s laws are not arbitrary—they are rooted in divine wisdom and mercy. The sacred months were a blessing to humanity, a time of peace and spiritual renewal. When people tamper with divine laws to suit their whims, they only harm themselves, even if they think they are gaining an advantage.
This verse also reminds us of a profound truth: Satan beautifies sin. He makes wrongdoing appear attractive, logical, and even necessary. The disbelievers of old thought they had a "practical solution" to their problems, but in reality, they were sinking deeper into misguidance.
As Muslims, we are called to submit fully to Allah’s commands—without alteration, without compromise, and without "creative reinterpretation" that serves our desires. True success lies in accepting Allah’s law as it is, trusting that His wisdom surpasses our limited understanding.
Let this verse be a reminder to guard our hearts against the whispers of Satan, who seeks to make us see evil as good and good as evil. And let us thank Allah for the gift of Islam—a complete, perfect, and unaltered way of life that leads us to His pleasure and eternal success.
And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people—not because He is incapable, but because they have chosen to close their eyes to the truth and persist in their arrogance. May Allah protect us all from such a fate and keep us steadfast on the straight path. Ameen.
