Word Meanings:

  • ʿAfā Allāhu ʿanka (عفا الله عنك): May Allah pardon you — an expression of gentle reproach wrapped in mercy and honor.
  • Adhinta lahum (أذنت لهم): You granted them permission (to stay behind from the expedition).
  • Ḥattā yatabayyana (حتى يتبين): Until it becomes clear and evident.
  • Ṣadaqū (صدقوا): Those who were truthful in their excuses.
  • Al-kādhibīn (الكاذبين): Those who lied in their excuses.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a tone of profound tenderness and divine care. Allah begins with the words "May Allah pardon you" — a phrase that softens the gentle rebuke that follows, comforting the Prophet’s heart before any admonition. The context is the expedition of Tabuk, when a group of hypocrites sought permission to stay behind, offering false excuses. The Prophet, out of his noble character and trust in people, granted them permission without first verifying their sincerity.

Allah then poses the question: "Why did you grant them permission before it became clear to you who were truthful and who were liars?" This is not a harsh criticism but a loving guidance, teaching the Prophet — and through him, all believers — the importance of discernment and patience. The verse encourages verifying matters before making decisions, especially when dealing with people's claims and excuses. Had the Prophet waited, the truthful would have been distinguished from the liars, and the hypocrites would have been exposed without any ambiguity.

The wisdom here is profound: Allah wanted to teach the Muslim community that leadership requires wisdom, patience, and careful examination — not out of suspicion, but out of justice and fairness. The verse also carries a beautiful lesson in humility: even the best of creation, the Prophet himself, is gently guided by his Lord, showing that seeking Allah's guidance and accepting constructive correction is a sign of true faith and nobility.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a treasure of mercy and wisdom. Notice how Allah addresses His beloved Prophet — with pardon first, then a gentle question. This is the divine etiquette of correction: to soften hearts before delivering guidance. It teaches us, as Muslims, how to advise one another with love and respect, never harshly or publicly humiliating others.

Moreover, the verse reminds us of the importance of sincerity (ṣidq) in all our affairs. The hypocrites of that time were exposed not by human judgment alone, but by Allah's revelation. Today, we may not receive divine revelations, but Allah has given us the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the ability to reflect and discern. Let us strive to be among the truthful in our words and deeds, for Allah loves the truthful and has prepared for them immense rewards.

Finally, this verse instills hope: Allah's pardon is vast, and His guidance is always available to those who seek it. No matter how many mistakes we make, the door of repentance and correction is always open. Let us turn to Allah with sincere hearts, asking Him to guide us to the straight path, just as He guided His beloved Prophet with mercy and wisdom.

📜 Verse 41-45 — At-Tawbah

Go forth, whether light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of Allah. That is better for you, if you only knew.
Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.
May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.
Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask permission of you to be excused from striving with their wealth and their lives. And Allah is Knowing of those who fear Him.
Only those would ask permission of you who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and whose hearts have doubted, and they, in their doubt, are hesitating.
