Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses a group of hypocrites who sought permission from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to stay behind from the expedition of Tabuk. Allah, the Most High, exposes their true intentions and lays bare the reality of their hearts.
Allah informs us that had the call been to an easy gain—spoils of war that were close at hand, or a journey that was smooth and free of hardship—these people would have certainly followed you, O Prophet. Their motivation was not faith or sincerity, but purely worldly desire. However, when they were called to fight the mighty Romans in the distant lands of Sham (Greater Syria), during the intense heat of summer, with scarce provisions and a long, exhausting trek, they hesitated, made excuses, and ultimately refused to join.
Then Allah reveals their future conduct: when the Prophet and the believers return from the expedition, these hypocrites will come to you swearing by Allah, saying, "If we had been able, we would have certainly gone out with you." They use these oaths as a shield, but in doing so, they are only destroying themselves. They are bringing ruin upon their own souls by persisting in falsehood, by breaking their oaths, and by exposing themselves to the wrath of Allah. And Allah knows with absolute, perfect knowledge that they are indeed liars—liars in their excuses, liars in their oaths, and liars in their claimed inability, for they were, in fact, physically and financially capable of joining the expedition, but their hearts were devoid of true faith.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
This verse is a profound lesson for every believer across time. It teaches us that Allah, the All-Knowing, is fully aware of the intentions that lie within our chests. We may be able to deceive people with sweet words and false excuses, but we can never deceive our Creator. The hypocrites thought they could hide their laziness and lack of faith behind their oaths, yet Allah exposed them in the Qur'an for all eternity.
Let this be a reminder for us to purify our intentions and to be honest with Allah and with ourselves. When we are called to good—whether it is jihad in the path of Allah, helping the needy, or any act of worship—let us respond with eagerness and sincerity, not with excuses and hesitation. For the believer knows that the true loss is not in the hardship of the journey, but in missing the reward of Allah and falling into His displeasure.
O Allah, make us among those who are truthful in their words and sincere in their deeds, and protect us from the traits of hypocrisy. Ameen.
