Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yastadhinuka – to ask your permission (to be excused from something).
- Yujahidu – to strive and fight in the cause of Allah.
- Bi'amwalihim wa anfusihim – with their wealth and their lives (i.e., sacrificing both material possessions and personal effort).
- Al-Muttaqin – the God-fearing, those who are mindful of Allah and obey His commands while avoiding what He has forbidden.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse draws a clear line between the character of true believers and that of hypocrites. Those who genuinely believe in Allah and the Last Day — with sincere faith that shapes their hearts and actions — do not come to you, O Prophet, asking for permission to stay behind from jihad (striving in Allah's cause) with their wealth and their lives. Such a request is simply not their nature. Their faith is too strong, their love for Allah too deep, and their hope for the reward of the Hereafter too real for them to seek excuses to avoid sacrifice.
Rather, the believer's attitude is one of eagerness and readiness. When the call to jihad comes, they respond swiftly — spending from their wealth and offering their very selves without hesitation. They do not wait to be pushed or urged; their inner conviction drives them forward. Asking to be excused from fighting in Allah's path is a trait of the hypocrites, whose hearts are empty of true faith and whose attachment to this worldly life overrides any concern for the Hereafter.
The verse concludes with a profound statement: "And Allah is All-Knowing of the Muttaqin" — those who truly fear Him and guard themselves against disobedience. Allah knows exactly who among His servants is sincere in their faith and who is merely putting on a show. He is fully aware of the intentions hidden in every heart, and He will reward the righteous according to their genuine piety and sacrifice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful reminder that true faith is not a mere claim on the tongue — it is a living reality that manifests in action and sacrifice. The believer's heart is so connected to Allah that the thought of missing an opportunity to serve His cause is unbearable. Imagine the honor of being counted among those whom Allah Himself describes as "the Muttaqin" — those whose piety is known to Him and whose reward is guaranteed. Let this verse inspire us to examine our own hearts: Are we eager to sacrifice for Allah's cause, or do we seek excuses? The door of faith is open to all, and every act of sincerity — no matter how small — is witnessed by the One who knows all. Strive to be among those who race toward goodness, and let your faith be a light that guides you to eternal success.
