Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ثُمَّ (Thumma): Then, indicating a sequence and emphasis, showing that what follows is even more severe and certain.
  • كَلَّا (Kallā): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and warning, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It serves as a stern deterrent, pulling the listener back from their heedlessness.
  • سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ (Sawfa Taʿlamūn): "You will surely come to know" — a future tense that carries the weight of inevitable certainty. It refers to the knowledge that will dawn upon them when they face the consequences of their actions.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the first warning in the previous verse, Allah repeats the admonition here with even greater force, saying: "Then, no indeed! You will surely come to know." This repetition is not mere redundancy — it is a deliberate and powerful emphasis, like a second knock on a door that has been ignored. The first warning was a call to wake up; this second one is a declaration that the matter is absolutely certain and unavoidable.

The verse addresses those who are consumed by the pursuit of worldly gains — wealth, status, children, and achievements — to the point that they neglect their duties toward Allah and the Hereafter. They boast and compete in accumulating more, thinking this is the ultimate success. But Allah tells them clearly: "You will come to know." You will come to know the true outcome of your obsession when you stand before your Lord and see what you have truly earned. You will come to know the regret that follows when the reality of your negligence becomes clear.

The repetition of the warning serves a profound purpose: it shakes the heart from its slumber. When a loving parent warns a child twice about a danger, it is out of deep care and concern. Likewise, Allah, in His infinite mercy, repeats this warning so that no one can claim ignorance. He gives us chance after chance to reflect and change course before it is too late.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a direct address to you and to me. How often do we find ourselves running after the temporary pleasures of this world, forgetting that every breath brings us closer to our final meeting with Allah? The One who created us, who sustains us, and who will judge us with perfect justice and mercy is telling us: "You will come to know." But why wait until that moment of knowing, when we can know now? Why wait for the regret of the Hereafter, when we can turn back to Allah today with sincere repentance?

The beauty of Islam is that it does not leave us in darkness — it constantly reminds us, warns us, and guides us toward what is truly good for us. This verse is a gift: a chance to pause, to reassess our priorities, and to realign our lives with the purpose for which we were created. Let us not be among those who only "come to know" when it is too late. Let us be among those who respond to the call of their Lord now, with humility and love, so that when we meet Him, we meet Him with hearts at peace.
