Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ثُمَّ (Thumma): Then, indicating a sequence and emphasis on what follows.
- لَتُسْأَلُنَّ (Latus'alunna): You will surely be asked — a strong oath-affirmed statement of certainty.
- يَوْمَئِذٍ (Yawma'idhin): On that Day — referring to the Day of Judgment.
- عَنِ النَّعِيمِ (Ani-Na'eem): About the blessings/comforts — all the favours and pleasures granted in worldly life.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the previous verses warned humanity about the inevitable sight of Hellfire, this verse delivers a final, emphatic truth: "Then, on that Day, you will surely be asked about the blessings."
This means that on the Day of Resurrection, every single person will be held accountable for every comfort and blessing they enjoyed in this worldly life. The questioning is not limited to wealth alone — it encompasses all forms of blessings: health, safety, time, youth, food, drink, family, knowledge, and every ease that Allah granted. The scholars have noted that even the simplest pleasures — like cool water to drink, restful sleep, or good eyesight — will be subject to questioning. Did we use them in obedience to Allah or in heedlessness? Did we thank Him for them or take them for granted?
This verse serves as a profound wake-up call. It reminds us that nothing in this life is purely "ours" — everything is a trust from Allah, and we will be asked how we utilised it. The question is not merely about whether we enjoyed these blessings, but about how we responded to them: Did we use our health to worship Allah? Did we use our wealth to help others? Did we use our time in beneficial deeds? Did we appreciate the gift of Islam and the Qur'an above all other blessings?
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine standing before your Lord, and every sip of water you drank, every breath you took, every moment of comfort you experienced — all being presented before you, and you are asked: "What did you do with this?" This is not a threat to instil fear alone, but an invitation to transform your life into a journey of gratitude and purpose. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time" (Al-Bukhari).
Let this verse move your heart to action. Start today — thank Allah for the blessings you have, use them in ways that please Him, and turn every comfort into a means of drawing closer to Him. The One who gave you these blessings is the Most Generous, and He does not ask you out of need, but out of love — to see if you will be among those who recognise His favours and respond with gratitude and obedience. Do not let the distractions of worldly accumulation make you forget the real purpose of these blessings: to know Allah, worship Him, and serve His creation. May Allah make us among those who use their blessings well and meet Him with a grateful, obedient heart.
