Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Thumma: Then, indicating a sequence and emphasis.
- Latarawunnaha: You will surely see it — referring to the Hellfire.
- ʿAyn al-Yaqīn: The eye of certainty — seeing something directly with one’s own eyes, leaving no room for doubt.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the previous verse affirmed that people will surely see the Hellfire, this verse intensifies that promise by repeating it with even greater emphasis. Allah says: "Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty." This means that on the Day of Judgment, every soul — believer and disbeliever alike — will witness the Hellfire with their very own eyes, not merely through knowledge or hearsay, but through direct, undeniable visual confirmation. This is a sight that penetrates the heart and leaves no trace of uncertainty.
The repetition here serves a profound purpose: it is a terrifying warning that shakes the heedless soul awake. When a person merely hears about something, they may remain doubtful or distant from its reality. But when they see it before their own eyes, the truth becomes absolute and inescapable. The scholars have noted that this vision of Hellfire will occur before any judgment is passed, so that every soul fully comprehends the gravity of what awaits — and then, for the believers who feared Allah in this life, it becomes a means of gratitude and relief, while for the disbelievers and negligent, it becomes the beginning of endless regret.
This verse also carries a beautiful lesson for us in this worldly life: certainty is not merely intellectual agreement — it is a state of the heart that transforms how we live. If we truly believed in the reality of that Day with the same certainty as if we were seeing it now, we would never allow the pursuit of wealth, status, or worldly gains to distract us from what truly matters: pleasing our Lord and preparing for that inevitable encounter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine standing on that Plain of Resurrection, looking directly at the blazing Fire with your own eyes. Would any worldly achievement still seem important at that moment? Would the hours spent accumulating possessions, chasing prestige, or arguing over trivial matters bring you any comfort? The Quran places this scene before you now — not to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you while there is still time. The door of repentance is open, the path of guidance is clear, and every good deed you do today becomes a light for you on that dark Day. Let this certainty move your heart today, so that when you see that Fire with your own eyes, you will be among those who pass by it safely, by the mercy of Allah, and enter instead into gardens of eternal bliss.
