Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Alif-Lam-Ra (الر): These are among the disjointed letters (huruf muqatta‘ah) that appear at the beginning of some chapters of the Quran. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, yet they serve as a miraculous challenge to the Arabs, showing that this Quran is composed of the very letters they use in their speech, and still they cannot produce anything like it.
- Zulumat (الظلمات): Literally "darknesses" — referring to the darkness of disbelief, ignorance, misguidance, and sin.
- Nur (النور): Light — referring to the light of faith, knowledge, guidance, and righteousness.
- Sirat (صراط): The path or way — here meaning the religion of Islam.
- Al-Aziz (العزيز): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who prevails over all things and cannot be overcome.
- Al-Hamid (الحميد): The Praiseworthy, the One who is deserving of all praise in every situation.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse opens with the disjointed letters "Alif-Lam-Ra," which remind us of the miraculous nature of the Quran — a book composed of the very letters we know, yet beyond human capacity to imitate.
Allah then declares: "This is a Book which We have sent down to you, O Muhammad." It is a divine revelation, not the words of a human being. It was sent down to you for a magnificent purpose: "to bring mankind out of the darknesses into the light."
What are these darknesses? They are the darkness of disbelief, the darkness of ignorance, the darkness of idolatry, the darkness of sin and moral corruption. And what is the light? It is the light of faith in Allah alone, the light of beneficial knowledge, the light of guidance to the straight path, and the light of good deeds that purify the soul.
This transformation, however, does not happen by human effort alone — it happens "by the permission of their Lord." It is Allah who guides hearts, opens chests, and facilitates the path of righteousness for those who sincerely seek it. The Prophet's role is to convey, call, and teach, but true guidance is in Allah's Hands.
The destination of this journey from darkness to light is "the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy." This path is Islam — the religion that leads to Allah, who is Al-Aziz, the Almighty whose power no one can resist, and Al-Hamid, the Praiseworthy who deserves all thanks and worship for His countless blessings.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate the beauty of this verse! The Quran was not sent down to burden you, but to rescue you. It is a mercy that pulls you from the suffocating darkness of confusion and sin into the refreshing light of certainty and peace. Every verse you read, every letter you recite, is a step toward that light.
Allah has made the path clear, the guide has been sent, and the door of His permission is open. All that remains is for you to take that first step — to open your heart to this Book and let its light illuminate your life. Will you not respond to this divine call and walk toward the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy?
