Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Mujrimūn (الْمُجْرِمُونَ): The criminals, the guilty ones, the polytheists and sinners who persisted in disbelief and transgression.
- Ra'ā (وَرَأَى): They saw with their own eyes, a direct and certain vision.
- Fa-ẓannū (فَظَنُّوا): Here, it means they became certain and fully convinced, not merely doubtful or guessing.
- Muwāqi'ūhā (مُوَاقِعُوهَا): They will fall into it, enter it, and be cast within it.
- Maṣrifan (مَصْرِفًا): A place to turn away to, an escape, a diversion, or any means of turning aside from it.
The Explanation of the Verse:
On that Day of Judgment, when the reckoning is complete and the destinies are sealed, the criminals—those who rejected the truth, oppressed others, and lived in sin—will see the Hellfire with their very own eyes. There will be no veil, no distance, no ambiguity. They will behold its terrifying blaze and hear its furious roar. At that moment, they will not merely suspect or hope; they will become absolutely certain, with a certainty that pierces their very souls, that they are destined to fall into it. There will be no room for doubt, no false hope, and no intercession to save them at that point.
And then comes the most crushing realization: they will search desperately for any way out—any path, any refuge, any corner to hide in—but they will find absolutely none. No door of escape, no diversion, no place to turn aside. The Fire surrounds them from every direction, and the decree of their Lord is just and final. Imagine the utter despair of a soul that knows its fate is sealed and that there is not even a single crack of escape. This is the reality that awaits those who turn away from the mercy of Allah in this life.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into hopelessness—it is a mercy from your Lord, revealed to wake you up before it is too late. Today, while you still breathe, the door of repentance is wide open. Allah, the Most Merciful, says: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins"* (Az-Zumar 39:53). The criminals in this verse saw the Fire only after the opportunity had passed, and they found no escape. But you, right now, have the greatest escape of all: sincere repentance, turning back to Allah, and reforming your life.
Do not wait until you see the Fire with your own eyes to believe. Believe now, act now, and love your Lord now. The same eyes that will see the Fire for the criminals will see the Gardens of Paradise for the believers. Choose today which sight you wish to behold. Allah has made His path clear, His mercy vast, and His invitation open. Answer Him before the day comes when there is no answer, and no escape.
