Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shurakā’i (شُرَكَائِي): My partners — referring to the false deities and idols that the polytheists associated with Allah in worship.
- Zaʿamtum (زَعَمْتُمْ): You claimed or alleged — indicating that their assertion of these deities being partners to Allah was nothing but a false claim.
- Mawbiq (مَوْبِقًا): A place of destruction, ruin, or perdition — a valley in Hellfire where both the worshippers and the worshipped false deities will be gathered together in shared punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will address those who associated partners with Him in this worldly life, and He will say to them: "Call upon those whom you claimed to be My partners — the idols, the false gods, and the beings you worshipped besides Me — and see if they can come to your aid or intercede for you on this day of ultimate need."
And so they will call out to them with desperation, seeking their help and deliverance. But those false deities will not respond to their call, nor will they answer their pleas, nor will they intercede for them in any way. They are utterly powerless — lifeless idols, or beings who themselves stand in need of Allah's mercy. The polytheists will find no support, no rescue, and no relief from the very objects of worship they had placed their hopes in throughout their earthly lives.
Then Allah informs us that He has placed between the worshippers and their worshipped false deities a *mawbiq* — a place of utter destruction and ruin, which is the blazing Fire of Hell. There, both the misguided worshippers and the false objects of their worship will be gathered together, all sharing in the same punishment and destruction. The idols will be thrown into the Fire along with those who worshipped them, and the false deities who accepted worship will likewise be cast into it — all of them united in a single fate of loss and ruin.
This scene carries a profound lesson for every soul: that the hopes placed in anything other than Allah — whether idols, people, wealth, status, or power — will all come to nothing on the Day when nothing avails except sincere faith and righteous deeds. On that day, every false refuge will collapse, every false support will vanish, and every partner that was invoked besides Allah will prove utterly helpless.
A Call to Reflection:
O servant of Allah! If these false deities could not even answer their worshippers on the Day of dire need — when the truth of everything becomes manifest — then what hope can anyone place in anything besides Allah in this life? The One who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him, who provides for His servants, who forgives sins and grants mercy — He alone is worthy of worship, He alone deserves your love, your hope, and your devotion. Do not wait until that Day to realize that everything besides Allah is vanity. Turn to Him now, sincerely, and you will find Him near, responsive, and full of mercy. For He says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghāfir 40:60). This is the promise of the One who never breaks His promise — unlike the false gods who will abandon their worshippers at the very moment they need them most.
