Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Yā Abati" (يَا أَبَتِ): "O my father" — a term of endearment and respect, showing the deep love and compassion in his address.
  • "Jā'anī min al-'ilm" (جَاءَنِي مِنَ الْعِلْمِ): "There has come to me of knowledge" — referring to the divine knowledge revealed to him through prophethood.
  • "Mā lam ya'tika" (مَا لَمْ يَأْتِكَ): "That which has not come to you" — knowledge that his father did not possess.
  • "Fattabi'nī" (فَاتَّبِعْنِي): "So follow me" — an earnest invitation to accept his guidance.
  • "Ahdika" (أَهْدِكَ): "I will guide you" — promising to lead him on the right path.
  • "Ṣirāṭan sawiyyā" (صِرَاطًا سَوِيًّا): "A straight path" — a path that is upright, balanced, and free from deviation.

The Interpretation:

In this verse, the noble Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham, peace be upon him) addresses his beloved father with the utmost tenderness and respect, saying: "O my dear father, indeed there has come to me from Allah knowledge that has not reached you — knowledge of the Oneness of Allah, His divine message, and the truth of the Hereafter." This knowledge was not earned through human effort or intellect alone, but was granted by Allah through revelation and prophethood.

He then lovingly invites his father: "So follow me, and I will guide you to a straight path" — a path that is clear, balanced, and leads to eternal success in this life and the next. It is a path that avoids the crookedness of misguidance and the darkness of polytheism.

What is remarkable here is the beautiful manner of da'wah (calling to Allah). Ibrāhīm does not mock his father's ignorance, nor does he belittle him. Instead, he acknowledges his father's position with the gentle phrase "O my father," and then presents his message with humility and confidence. He speaks of the knowledge he has received as a gift from Allah, not as a personal achievement, and he offers his guidance as a service of love, not as an act of superiority.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson in how to invite others to the truth: with gentleness, respect, and sincere concern for their well-being. Even when calling one's own family members to Islam, the approach must be rooted in compassion and wisdom. The goal is not to win an argument, but to save a soul from the fire of misguidance and lead it to the light of faith.

The "straight path" (ṣirāṭ sawiyy) is the path of Tawḥīd (monotheism) — worshipping Allah alone without partners, following His messengers, and living a life of righteousness and justice. It is the path that brings peace to the heart, clarity to the mind, and success in both worlds.

Dear reader, reflect on the love and mercy embedded in this call. Ibrāhīm's words are not harsh or arrogant; they are the words of a loving son who yearns for his father's salvation. This is the essence of Islamic da'wah — to call others to goodness with wisdom and beautiful exhortation, and to never give up on those we love, no matter how far they may seem from the truth.

May Allah grant us the wisdom to call others to His path with the same gentleness and sincerity, and may He guide us all to the straight path that leads to His eternal pleasure.

[Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?
43يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي قَدْ جَاءَنِي مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا لَمْ يَأْتِكَ فَاتَّبِعْنِي أَهْدِكَ صِرَاطًا سَوِيًّا
O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.
44يَا أَبَتِ لَا تَعْبُدِ الشَّيْطَانَ ۖ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَصِيًّا
O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.
45يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَن يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٌ مِّنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيًّا
O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."
