Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "O my father" (يَا أَبَتِ): A tender, respectful address used by a child toward a parent, showing love and reverence.
- "Do not worship Satan" (لَا تَعْبُدِ الشَّيْطَانَ): This means do not obey Satan, for obedience to him in worshipping idols is a form of worshipping him.
- "Disobedient" (عَصِيًّا): One who rebels against the command of Allah and refuses to submit.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continues his heartfelt advice to his beloved father, Azar. He calls him with the affectionate phrase "O my father," softening his words to win his heart. He then warns him against worshipping Satan—meaning, do not follow Satan's whispers and temptations that lead you to bow down before these idols. For whoever obeys Satan in worshipping false deities has indeed worshipped him, since Satan calls to that and delights in it.
Prophet Ibrahim then gives a clear reason for this prohibition: Satan has always been rebellious against the Most Merciful (Ar-Rahman). He refused the command of Allah when He ordered him to prostrate to Adam, and he has persisted in his arrogance and defiance ever since. So how could a wise person follow a creature who is so openly rebellious against his Creator? How could anyone obey a being whose entire existence is built upon opposing the mercy and guidance of Allah?
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: true worship belongs to Allah alone, and following Satan—whether directly or through his agents and temptations—is a path of ruin. It also shows us the beautiful manners of Prophet Ibrahim: even when advising his father against falsehood, he spoke with gentleness, respect, and love, never harshness or arrogance. This is the way of the prophets in calling others to the truth.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful scene: a son, filled with mercy and wisdom, reaching out to his own father to save him from the fire of misguidance. Ibrahim did not abandon his father despite his father's stubbornness in idol worship. He kept calling him with patience and compassion. This is the spirit of Islam—to advise with kindness, to seek the good of others, and to never give up on guiding those we love. And if you ever find yourself in a situation where you must advise someone, remember the example of Ibrahim: speak gently, argue with wisdom, and let your love for them shine through your words. For hearts are opened by mercy, not by force. And know that Allah, the Most Merciful, loves those who call to Him with sincerity and gentleness, and He rewards them with guidance and success in this life and the Hereafter.
