Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- السُّفَهَاء (Al-Sufahā'): The foolish ones, those with weak intellects and little understanding.
- مَا وَلَّاهُمْ (Mā wallāhum): What turned them away or diverted them.
- قِبْلَتِهِمُ (Qiblatihim): Their direction of prayer (the sacred direction Muslims face during prayer).
- صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ (Sirāṭin mustaqīm): A straight path — the path of truth and guidance with no deviation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, informs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that the foolish among people — those with weak minds and shallow understanding, such as the Jews, the hypocrites, and the polytheists of Makkah — will mockingly ask: *"What has turned them (the Muslims) away from their qiblah (the direction of prayer) that they used to face?"* They referred to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), which was the first qiblah in Islam before the command came to face the Ka'bah in Makkah.
These critics spoke not out of sincere inquiry, but out of ridicule and a desire to cast doubt. They thought that changing the qiblah was a sign of confusion or contradiction in the religion. So Allah commanded His Prophet to answer them with a response that silences all objections: *"Say: To Allah belongs the east and the west."* This means that every direction — the east, the west, and everything in between — is under Allah's dominion and ownership. No place is outside His sovereignty, and no direction is inherently sacred except by His command.
Then Allah adds: *"He guides whom He wills to a straight path."* This is a profound statement — Allah, in His infinite wisdom, directs His servants to whichever direction He chooses, and He guides those whom He wills to the path of truth and righteousness. The change of qiblah was not a mistake or a whim; it was a divine decree from the Lord of all directions, who knows what is best for His servants and tests their obedience.
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: the true essence of worship is complete submission to Allah's command, wherever it directs us. The Muslim does not ask "why" in a rebellious manner, but rather embraces Allah's guidance with trust and love, knowing that Allah only commands what is good and wise. The qiblah is not about the direction itself, but about obedience to the One who set that direction.
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this response: instead of engaging in a lengthy debate about the wisdom behind the change, Allah simply reminds us that all directions belong to Him. It is as if He is saying: "The One who commands you is the Owner of everything — so His command is the ultimate authority." This teaches us to submit wholeheartedly to Allah's decrees, even when we do not fully grasp the wisdom behind them, for He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.
And what a blessing it is to be among those whom Allah guides to the straight path — the path of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. Let us strive to be among them by following Allah's commands with sincerity and patience, trusting that His guidance is always for our benefit, in this life and the next.
