Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse serves as a profound and liberating reminder to the believers. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) addresses those who might take pride in their lineage or ancestry, saying: "Those are a people who have passed away." The prophets and the righteous nations that came before you — the followers of Ibrahim, Ismail, and Ya'qub — have all departed from this world. They have gone to meet their Lord, and they will be judged solely by what they themselves earned and accomplished during their lifetimes.

For them is what they earned — their faith, their deeds, their struggles, and their rewards — and for you is what you earn. There is no transfer of deeds from one person to another, nor is there any inheritance of sin or virtue. No soul shall bear the burden of another. This is the ultimate justice of Allah: every person stands before Him alone, accountable for their own choices and actions.

And the verse concludes with a powerful statement: "And you will not be asked about what they used to do." You will not be questioned about the deeds of those who came before you, just as they will not be questioned about your deeds. This cuts off any false reliance on ancestry, lineage, or mere association with righteous people.

The lesson here is profound: what matters is not whose descendant you are, but what *you* do with your own life. The Arabs of the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) took pride in their forefathers, some of whom were righteous prophets, while others were not. Allah clarifies that mere blood relation to a righteous person brings no benefit unless accompanied by personal faith and righteous action. Similarly, the People of the Book claimed that their ancestors were prophets, thinking this would save them — but Allah refutes this notion entirely.

This verse also carries a beautiful call to self-reflection and personal responsibility. It frees you from the chains of the past — whether those chains are feelings of guilt for the sins of your ancestors or false pride in their achievements. You are not a prisoner of history; you are the architect of your own destiny. Your salvation lies not in who your grandfather was, but in what your hands have earned and what your heart believes.

So, dear believer, let this verse awaken within you a spirit of initiative and sincerity. Do not be complacent, thinking that the righteousness of others will save you. And do not despair, thinking that the sins of your forefathers will doom you. You stand before Allah as an individual, with a clean slate, invited to write your own story of faith, obedience, and devotion.

This is the beauty of Islam: it establishes a direct, personal connection between you and your Creator, unmediated by ancestry, tribe, or social status. The most honored among you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous. So race towards good deeds, purify your intentions, and know that every soul will reap what it has sown — and Allah is the Most Just, the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 139-143 — Al-Baqarah

Say, [O Muhammad], "Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to Him."
Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
That is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.
The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they used to face?" Say, "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.
