📖 English Meaning
Mankind was [of] one religion [before their deviation]; then Allah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed. And none differed over the Scripture except those who were given it - after the clear proofs came to them - out of jealous animosity among themselves. And Allah guided those who believed to the truth concerning that over which they had differed, by His permission. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Ummah wāḥidah (أمة واحدة): One single community or nation, united upon one faith.
  • Mubashshirīn (مبشرين): Bringers of glad tidings — those who give good news of Paradise to the believers.
  • Mundhirīn (منذرين): Warners — those who caution against the punishment of Allah for disbelief and disobedience.
  • Al-Kitāb (الكتاب): The Divine Scripture — here referring to the heavenly books revealed to the prophets, including the Torah, Gospel, and ultimately the Qur'an.
  • Bil-ḥaqq (بالحق): With the truth — meaning the content of these scriptures was absolute truth and justice.
  • Baghyan (بغيا): Transgression, envy, and wrongful oppression — a motive rooted in arrogance and rivalry rather than sincere search for truth.
  • Al-Bayyināt (البينات): Clear proofs, evidences, and miracles that left no room for doubt.
  • Ṣirāṭ mustaqīm (صراط مستقيم): The straight path — the unerring way of faith and righteousness that leads to Allah's pleasure.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, informs us that humanity began as a single nation — united upon the natural faith of monotheism, following the guidance of their father Adam, peace be upon him. They were in agreement upon the worship of Allah alone. However, as time passed, Shayṭān led them astray, and they fell into disagreement and division — some remained believers, while others slipped into disbelief and polytheism.

It was out of His mercy that Allah then sent the prophets — one after another — as bearers of glad tidings and as warners. They gave hope to those who would believe and obey, promising them the eternal bliss of Paradise, and they cautioned those who would reject and disobey, warning them of a severe punishment. Along with these prophets, Allah revealed the Divine Books, containing absolute truth and justice, so that the prophets and their followers could judge between people in the matters over which they had differed — restoring harmony and guiding humanity back to the straight path.

Yet, remarkably, the very people who were given the Scripture — the People of the Book — were the ones who fell into dispute over it. They did not differ out of ignorance, but after clear proofs and undeniable evidences had come to them, confirming the truth of what was revealed. Their difference arose purely from transgression and envy among themselves — each group vying for worldly status and leadership, and some even concealing the descriptions of the final Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that were found in their own scriptures.

Then, by His grace and permission, Allah guided the believers to the truth concerning those very matters of disagreement. He opened their hearts to recognize what was right and to follow it with sincerity, granting them clarity where others had chosen confusion. And Allah — in His perfect wisdom and justice — guides whom He wills to the straight path, the path that has no crookedness in it, the path of faith that leads to His eternal pleasure.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder the beauty of this verse! Allah did not leave humanity in darkness after their division — He sent mercy after mercy in the form of prophets and scriptures. And when people differed out of envy, He still guided the sincere believers to the truth. This is the hallmark of His compassion: He never abandons those who sincerely seek Him.

Today, that same guidance is available to you through the final revelation — the Qur'an — and the final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. The truth is not hidden; it is clear, preserved, and calling out to every heart that is willing to listen. Do not let envy, pride, or worldly desires keep you from it. Be among those whom Allah guides to the straight path — the path of peace, purpose, and eternal success. Open your heart to the message of Islam, and you will find in it the answers your soul has been searching for.

📜 Verse 211-215 — Al-Baqarah

Ask the Children of Israel how many a sign of evidence We have given them. And whoever exchanges the favor of Allah [for disbelief] after it has come to him - then indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
Beautified for those who disbelieve is the life of this world, and they ridicule those who believe. But those who fear Allah are above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah gives provision to whom He wills without account.
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allah?" Unquestionably, the help of Allah is near.
They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, "Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it."
