Explanation of the Verse:
The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him: "What should we spend, and on whom?" So Allah revealed this verse to answer their question with clarity and wisdom.
The answer comes in two parts: first, what to spend, and second, where to place it.
As for what to spend: Allah says, "Whatever good you spend" — meaning any lawful, pure, and beneficial wealth, regardless of its type or amount. The word "good" here is significant: it teaches us that our spending should come from what we love and what is halal, not from what is doubtful or of poor quality. Allah is pure and only accepts that which is pure.
As for where to place it: Allah specifies five categories, arranged in a beautiful order of priority:
- Parents — They come first, for they are the greatest of those who have rights upon us. Their care, sacrifice, and love cannot be repaid, but spending on them is a step toward gratitude.
- Nearest relatives — After parents come the extended family: brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and others. Charity begins at home, and maintaining family ties is a beloved act to Allah.
- Orphans — Those who have lost their protector and provider. Their hearts are tender, and your kindness can be a source of immense comfort and healing.
- The needy — Those who struggle to make ends meet, who hide their poverty and do not beg. Reaching out to them with help is a form of worship that Allah witnesses.
- The wayfarer — The traveler who is far from home and resources, stranded in a strange land. Helping such a person is helping someone who may be in desperate need of even the basics.
Then the verse concludes with a profound reassurance: "And whatever good you do, indeed Allah is fully Aware of it." Nothing escapes His knowledge — not the smallest coin given in secret, not the kindest gesture done in private, not the help extended when no one is watching. He sees it all, and He will reward it in ways beyond your imagination.
A Call to Action:
Dear believer, this verse opens a door of immense opportunity. You do not need to be wealthy to be generous — spend whatever good you have, even if it is little. And you do not need to search far for recipients — look first to your parents, your relatives, the orphans, the needy, and the stranded traveler around you.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." So give with confidence, knowing that your provision is with Allah, and your reward is guaranteed. Every act of goodness — whether visible or hidden — is recorded by the One who never forgets and never fails to reward.
Let this verse transform your heart: your wealth is a trust from Allah, and spending it on those He loves is the path to His pleasure. So race toward goodness, and know that Allah is watching, aware, and ready to reward you abundantly.
