Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Kutiba (كُتِبَ): It was decreed, ordained, or made obligatory.
  • Al-Qital (الْقِتَالُ): Fighting, specifically in the cause of Allah against the enemies of the faith.
  • Kurh (كُرْهٌ): Something disliked, burdensome, or repugnant to one's nature and inclination.
  • 'Asa (عَسَىٰ): "Perhaps" or "it may be" — a word that conveys hope and expectation of what is to come.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, Allah has made fighting in His cause an obligation upon you — not as a suggestion or an option, but as a divine command. Yet, this obligation comes as something heavy on your souls, for it demands the sacrifice of your comfort, your wealth, and even your very lives. It is natural for the human heart to shrink from hardship, danger, and the prospect of loss. This is not a blameworthy feeling in itself, for the Prophet ﷺ and his companions also felt the weight of this command. What matters is obedience despite the reluctance.

But here lies the profound wisdom of your Lord: you may detest something, and yet it is overflowing with good for you. Fighting in Allah's path, despite its apparent harshness, carries within it immense blessings — the elevation of His word, the protection of the weak, the purification of the soul, and the attainment of one of two beautiful outcomes: either victory and spoils in this world, or martyrdom and eternal Paradise in the next. Either way, the believer never loses.

Conversely, you may love something — such as staying behind, clinging to comfort, or avoiding the struggle — and yet it may be pure harm for you. It could lead to humiliation, the dominance of your enemies, the loss of great rewards, and a heart that grows distant from Allah.

Your perception is limited, your knowledge is partial, and your judgment is clouded by immediate desires. But Allah — glorified and exalted — knows the end from the beginning. He knows what nurtures your faith, what protects your community, and what secures your success in both worlds. You do not know, but He knows. So trust Him, submit to His decree, and step forward with certainty that whatever He commands is ultimately for your good — even when your heart hesitates.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is a timeless lesson in divine wisdom and human limitation. How often have we disliked a trial, only to later realize it was the very means of our growth? How often have we chased what we loved, only to find it was the source of our ruin? This is the nature of life — but the believer is not left to stumble in the dark. Allah has given you a light: His revelation, His commands, and His promises. When He asks something of you, even if it is difficult, know that His wisdom is perfect and His love for you is greater than your own self-love.

So do not let the heaviness of a duty turn you away from its reward. The gates of Paradise are surrounded by hardships, and the path of honor is paved with sacrifice. Embrace the command of your Lord with a heart full of trust, and you will find that what once seemed bitter becomes the sweetest victory — in this life and the next. And remember always: "And Allah knows, while you know not."

📜 Verse 214-218 — Al-Baqarah

Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allah?" Unquestionably, the help of Allah is near.
They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, "Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it."
Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.
They ask you about the sacred month - about fighting therein. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing." And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever - for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally.
Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah - those expect the mercy of Allah. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
