Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has made His religion easy for you and has never placed an unbearable burden upon you. When you are in a state of fear — such as during battle or facing an enemy — and you cannot perform the prayer in its normal, complete manner, then pray in whatever way you are able: walking on foot or riding upon your mounts, facing the qiblah or not, and even if you can only gesture with your head or eyes. What matters is that you never abandon the prayer, for it is the pillar of your faith and your connection to your Lord.
However, when the fear subsides and you feel safe and secure, then return to performing the prayer in its full, perfect form — standing, bowing, and prostrating as the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught you. Remember Allah with all forms of remembrance: prayer, praise, gratitude, and supplication. Thank Him for the great blessing of security and for teaching you what you did not know — the guidance, the rulings, and the wisdom that illuminate your path in this life and the next.
This verse beautifully demonstrates the practicality and mercy of Islam. Your Lord never commands you to do something beyond your capacity. Even in the most dangerous circumstances, He keeps the door of worship open for you, so that your heart remains connected to Him at all times. And when ease returns, He invites you to perfect your worship and to be grateful — for gratitude is the key to increased blessings. Indeed, the knowledge of Allah and His religion is the greatest treasure, and He has honored you by teaching you what you did not know. So hold fast to this gift, and let your life be a continuous remembrance of your Lord, in times of ease and in times of hardship alike.
