Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- حَافِظُوا (Hāfizū): Persist and be steadfast in doing something consistently, without neglect.
- الصَّلَوَات (Al-Salawāt): The five obligatory daily prayers.
- الْوُسْطَى (Al-Wusṭā): The middle prayer, which is the 'Asr (afternoon) prayer, as confirmed by the majority of scholars.
- قَانِتِينَ (Qānitīn): Those who are devoutly obedient, humble, and submissive before Allah, with stillness of the heart and body.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah commands you to guard and preserve your five daily prayers with utmost care—performing them at their appointed times, fulfilling their conditions, pillars, and obligatory acts, and completing them in the best possible manner. This is a call to make prayer the cornerstone of your daily life, never letting worldly distractions cause you to miss it or rush through it carelessly.
Among these prayers, Allah specifically emphasizes the middle prayer—the 'Asr prayer—singling it out for special mention due to its great virtue and the ease with which it can be neglected, as it falls during the busy hours of the afternoon when people are occupied with work and trade. Guarding this prayer is a sign of true faith and discipline.
Then Allah instructs you to stand before Him in prayer in a state of *qunūt*—that is, with complete humility, submission, and devotion. Your hearts should be present, your bodies still, your eyes lowered, and your minds fully focused on the majesty of the One you are worshipping. This is the essence of a living, heartfelt connection with Allah.
A Call to the Heart:
Dear believer, these words are not merely a command—they are an invitation to a life of peace and purpose. When you guard your prayers, you guard your soul. When you stand before Allah in humility, you find strength that no worldly power can give. The prayer is your daily appointment with your Creator, a moment where the burdens of life are lifted and your heart is renewed.
Imagine the tranquility of knowing that five times a day, you stand before the Most Merciful, and He listens to you. The 'Asr prayer, in particular, is a test of your commitment—will you pause your busy day to remember Allah? If you do, you will find that Allah never forgets you. Make prayer your refuge, and you will see how it transforms your life, bringing barakah (blessing) to your time, peace to your heart, and success in this world and the Hereafter.
