Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yumnūn (يَمُنّون): Reminding the recipient of one’s favor or charity, boasting about it, or making them feel indebted.
- Adhā (أَذًى): Causing harm or hurt to the recipient through words or actions, such as insulting, reproaching, or humiliating them.
- Sabīl Allāh (سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ): The path of Allah, which includes all acts of obedience, especially jihad (striving in His cause) and charitable deeds done sincerely for His sake.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse describes the believers who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah—whether in jihad, helping the needy, or supporting good causes—and then, crucially, they do not follow their spending with reminders of their generosity (mann) or with any form of harm (adhā) to those who received it. They do not boast about their giving, nor do they belittle the recipient, nor do they reproach them for their need. Their giving is pure, driven solely by sincerity and the desire to please their Lord.
For such people, Allah promises a great reward: their full recompense is secured with their Lord, and they shall have no fear concerning what lies ahead in the Hereafter, nor shall they grieve over anything they missed in this worldly life. Their hearts are at peace because they have purified their intentions and their actions, and Allah does not let the reward of those who do good ever be lost.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the value of charity is not merely in the amount given, but in the purity of the heart behind it. A single act of giving, free from arrogance and hurt, is far more beloved to Allah than a grand donation tainted by pride or harm. The believer who gives in this manner attains a state of complete tranquility—no fear, no sorrow—because they have entrusted their affairs to Allah and sought only His pleasure.
Da‘wah Message:
Dear brother or sister in humanity, imagine a life free from fear and grief—this is the promise of Allah to those who give sincerely. When you spend in the way of Allah, do not spoil your beautiful deed by reminding others of it or hurting their feelings. Instead, let your charity be a secret between you and your Lord, a pure seed that will bloom into eternal gardens of bliss. This is the path of the righteous, the path that leads to peace in this world and the next. Open your heart to this divine guidance, and you will taste a joy that no wealth can buy and a security that no worldly power can provide. Allah is watching your sincerity, and He never fails to reward those who do good.
