Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • اهْبِطُوا (ihbitū): Descend, go down, or leave. It signifies a movement from a higher, more elevated state to a lower one.
  • هُدًى (hudan): Guidance, direction, or a way of life that leads to truth and righteousness. Here, it refers to divine guidance sent through prophets and revealed scriptures.
  • فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ (fa lā khawfun ʿalayhim): "No fear shall be upon them." This refers to the absence of fear regarding future events, especially in the Hereafter.
  • وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ (wa lā hum yaḥzanūn): "Nor shall they grieve." This refers to the absence of sorrow over past losses or missed worldly opportunities.

The Interpretation:

After Adam and his wife were expelled from Paradise for disobeying the divine command, Allah addressed them and their future descendants with a decisive decree: "Descend from it, all of you." This descent was not merely a punishment—it was the beginning of a new chapter in human existence on earth, filled with trials, responsibilities, and opportunities for spiritual growth.

However, in the very same breath, Allah—out of His infinite mercy and compassion—gave humanity a promise of hope. He declared that guidance would come from Him: through prophets, scriptures, and the innate conscience placed within every human being. This guidance is a light that illuminates the path of righteousness in the darkness of worldly distractions and temptations.

The condition is clear: whoever follows this divine guidance—by believing in the messengers, obeying the commandments, and living a life of sincerity and devotion—will be granted a twofold peace. First, they will have no fear concerning their future, especially regarding the Day of Judgment and the life to come. They will not dread what awaits them because their deeds have been anchored in faith and good works. Second, they will not grieve over what they have left behind in this world—whether it be wealth, status, relationships, or fleeting pleasures—because they understand that the true and everlasting reward is with Allah.

This verse is a profound source of comfort for every believer. It teaches us that the trials of this life, including our very existence on earth after the fall of Adam, are not without purpose. Allah did not abandon humanity; rather, He equipped us with the most precious gift—guidance. The path to serenity is not through accumulating worldly goods or avoiding hardship, but through clinging to the rope of Allah. When you follow His guidance, your heart becomes anchored in trust, your mind is freed from the anxiety of the unknown, and your soul is released from the grief of what you cannot control.

So, dear reader, know that your Lord has not left you to wander aimlessly. His guidance is available to you at every moment—in the Qur'an, in the teachings of His final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and in the signs scattered across the universe and within your own self. Embrace it, and you will taste a peace that no worldly circumstance can disturb. This is the promise of Allah, and His promise is true.

📜 Verse 36-40 — Al-Baqarah

But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."
Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."
O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant [upon you] that I will fulfill your covenant [from Me], and be afraid of [only] Me.
