Explanation of the Verse:
After Adam (peace be upon him) and his wife fell into error by eating from the forbidden tree, they did not remain in despair. The Most Merciful Lord did not abandon them. Instead, Allah, in His infinite grace, taught Adam specific words of repentance — a divine gift of guidance. These words are mentioned later in the Qur'an (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:23): *"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."*
Adam received these words with full understanding, sincerity, and acceptance. He did not make excuses or blame others; he acknowledged his own fault and turned back to his Lord with humility and hope. This is the essence of true repentance — recognizing one's mistake, feeling remorse, and sincerely seeking Allah's forgiveness.
Allah, in His perfect mercy, accepted Adam's repentance and forgave him. This was not because Adam deserved it, but because Allah is At-Tawwāb — the One Who constantly turns to His servants with forgiveness and loves to accept their return to Him. He is Ar-Raḥīm — the Most Merciful, whose mercy reaches those who humble themselves before Him.
A Call to the Reader:
This beautiful story carries a profound lesson for every human being. No matter how great the mistake, the door of repentance is always open. Allah does not want to punish you; He wants you to return to Him. He says in the Qur'an: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful"* (Az-Zumar 39:53).
Just as Adam was taught the words of repentance, you too can turn to Allah at any moment — in the depths of the night, in the midst of your daily struggles, or in a quiet moment of reflection. Simply say: *"My Lord, I have wronged myself, and if You do not forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will surely be among the losers."* And know with certainty that Allah is waiting to embrace you with His mercy, for He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
Let this verse fill your heart with hope. No sin is too great, and no distance is too far. The One Who created you loves you more than a mother loves her child, and His door of repentance remains open until the very last moment of your life. So hasten to Him, for He is indeed the Oft-Returning, the Most Merciful.
