Word Meanings:
- Qawlan layyinan — gentle, soft, and lenient speech; words that carry no harshness, roughness, or intimidation.
- Yatadhakkar — to be reminded, to reflect, and to take heed of the truth.
- Yakhsha — to fear Allah with reverence and awe, leading to obedience and repentance.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, commands His two noble prophets — Musa and Harun (peace be upon them) — to go to Pharaoh, the tyrant who had transgressed all bounds in his arrogance, disbelief, and oppression. Yet, despite Pharaoh's immense wickedness, Allah instructs them to address him with the utmost gentleness and softness of speech. They are told: "Speak to him with tender, kind words — words that are free from harshness and intimidation — so that perhaps he may be moved to reflect, remember his Lord, and come to fear Him."
This divine directive reveals a profound principle in calling others to the truth: even the most stubborn and tyrannical soul deserves to be approached with compassion and wisdom. The goal is not to humiliate or provoke, but to open a door for guidance. The phrase "perhaps he may remember or fear" shows that the outcome is left to Allah — the prophets' duty is simply to deliver the message with excellence, while the result rests entirely in Allah's hands.
The gentleness commanded here is not a sign of weakness, but rather a strategic and divinely ordained approach that softens hearts and removes barriers to acceptance. It reflects the beautiful character of Islamic da'wah: inviting others with wisdom, beautiful admonition, and respectful dialogue, even when the recipient is hostile.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is this divine instruction! If Allah commanded His prophets to speak gently even to Pharaoh — the man who claimed divinity and slaughtered innocents — then how much more should we, as Muslims, embody gentleness in our words and interactions with others? This verse teaches us that harshness never wins hearts, while kindness can penetrate even the hardest of them. Let us strive to be people of soft speech and noble character, for perhaps through our gentle words, Allah may guide someone to the light of Islam. And remember, your role is to plant the seed with kindness — the growth is always from Allah.
