Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَا: To hasten against us with punishment or to act hastily and severely toward us.
  • يَطْغَى: To transgress all bounds, exceed the limits in oppression, or become arrogant and tyrannical.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Here, we witness a beautiful moment of humility and reliance on Allah from two of His greatest prophets—Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them). As they prepare to face the mightiest tyrant of their time, Pharaoh, they turn to their Lord with a sincere and heartfelt plea: *"Our Lord, indeed we fear that he may hasten [punishment] against us or that he may transgress."*

Their fear was not a sign of weak faith, but rather a natural human concern as they prepared to deliver a monumental message to a man who claimed divinity and ruled with absolute cruelty. They feared that Pharaoh might punish them immediately before they could complete their mission, or that he might exceed all bounds in his oppression against them—perhaps even killing them or torturing their followers.

This verse teaches us several profound lessons:

  1. The Prophets were human: They experienced fear and anxiety like any of us, yet their fear drove them closer to Allah, not away from Him. This shows us that having fears is natural—what matters is where we take those fears.
  2. Turning to Allah in times of difficulty: When faced with daunting challenges, the best response is to call upon Allah with sincerity, acknowledging our weakness and His infinite power.
  3. The importance of preparation: Moses and Aaron prepared themselves spiritually before their confrontation. They didn't rely on their own strength or eloquence alone, but sought divine support and reassurance.

This beautiful supplication reminds us that no matter how great the obstacle before us, Allah is greater. When we place our trust in Him and turn to Him with humble hearts, He answers our prayers and grants us strength beyond our own capabilities. The very next verse shows how Allah responded to their plea with the comforting words: *"Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see."* What a beautiful reminder that when we call upon Allah, He never abandons us!
