Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Asma' al-Husna: The most beautiful names — those that denote absolute perfection and majesty, free from any flaw or deficiency.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse affirms the purest form of monotheism (Tawhid) and establishes the foundation of all Islamic belief. Allah — glorified and exalted be He — declares that there is no deity worthy of worship except Him alone. Every other being, object, or force that people might worship — whether idols, celestial bodies, prophets, angels, or worldly desires — is false and unworthy of devotion. Only Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all existence, possesses the right to be worshipped.
The verse then beautifully describes Allah's attribute of perfection: "To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names." This means that every name attributed to Allah in the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah reflects a perfect and complete attribute — such as Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful), Al-Hakim (The All-Wise), Al-Qadir (The All-Powerful), Al-Ghafur (The Oft-Forgiving). These names are "most beautiful" because they denote absolute perfection in every sense — there is no deficiency, weakness, or flaw in any of them. Each name points to a magnificent quality that belongs to Allah alone in its most complete form.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, contemplate the greatness of this verse! It invites you to know your Lord through His beautiful names — to draw closer to Him by understanding His mercy, His power, His wisdom, and His love for His creation. When you know that Allah is Al-Wadud (The Most Loving), you find comfort in His care. When you know He is Al-Mujeeb (The Answerer of Prayers), you turn to Him with confidence. When you know He is Al-Ghafoor (The Oft-Forgiving), you never despair of His mercy, no matter how great your sins may be.
This verse is an open door to a life of peace and purpose. It frees you from the bondage of false gods — whether they are people, possessions, or passions — and connects you directly to the One who holds all power and goodness in His hands. Embrace this truth sincerely, and you will find tranquility in this life and eternal success in the Hereafter. Call upon your Lord using His beautiful names, for He has promised to respond to those who know Him and seek Him with sincerity.
