Word Meanings:

  • Dhan-Nun (ذَا النُّونِ): "The one of the fish" — this is Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, so named because a great fish (whale) swallowed him.
  • Mughadiban (مُغَاضِبًا): Angry, leaving in a state of displeasure — specifically, angry at his people's persistent disbelief, not angry with his Lord.
  • La Naqdira (لَن نَّقْدِرَ): We will not straiten or restrict — i.e., he thought Allah would not make things difficult for him or hold him to account for this departure.
  • Adh-Dhulumat (الظُّلُمَاتِ): The darknesses — the darkness of the whale's belly, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the night.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah the Exalted commands His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — and by extension, all believers — to remember the story of His righteous servant Yunus ibn Matta, peace be upon him. This is a story of trial, repentance, and divine mercy that carries profound lessons for every soul.

Yunus was sent to his people in Nineveh, calling them to worship Allah alone. He patiently invited them, but they persisted in their arrogance and disbelief. When he saw their stubbornness, he warned them of impending punishment, and when they did not respond, he left them in a state of anger — anger at their disobedience and rejection of the truth. This anger, though rooted in sincere concern, led him to depart from his people without Allah's explicit command. He was not angry with his Lord, but his action was not in accordance with the patience and perseverance that prophethood demands.

As he traveled away, he boarded a ship that became overwhelmed by a violent storm. To lighten the load, the sailors cast lots, and the lot fell upon Yunus. He was thrown into the sea, where a great whale swallowed him by Allah's decree. It was then that he realized his error. He came to understand that Allah would indeed straiten him — that his departure without divine permission was a shortcoming that required accountability. In the depths of that darkness — the darkness of the whale's belly, the darkness of the deep sea, and the darkness of the night — he turned to his Lord in sincere humility and repentance.

He cried out with the words that have become a beacon of hope for every sinner: "La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minadh-dhalimin" — "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

This supplication embodies the essence of true repentance: acknowledging Allah's absolute oneness and perfection, while confessing one's own shortcomings and injustice against oneself. He did not make excuses; he did not blame his people or his circumstances. He simply declared his faith in Allah's uniqueness and admitted his own wrongdoing.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse carries a message of immense hope. If a prophet of Allah — a man of such high station — could err and then be forgiven through sincere repentance, then what about us, with all our sins and shortcomings? The door of repentance is always open. No matter how deep your darkness — the darkness of your sins, your despair, or your circumstances — the light of Allah's mercy can reach you if you call upon Him with a truthful heart.

Let these words be your lifeline in moments of difficulty. When you feel trapped in darkness, when your heart is heavy with guilt, when you feel far from Allah — remember the supplication of Yunus. Repeat it with conviction, and know that Allah answers the one who calls upon Him. He said in His Book: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me" (2:186).

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the supplication of Yunus is a key to relief: "The supplication of Dhun-Nun when he called out from the belly of the whale — no Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything except that Allah answers him" (At-Tirmidhi).

So, turn to your Lord in every hardship. Acknowledge His perfection, confess your shortcomings, and trust in His boundless mercy. For He is the One who saved Yunus from the darkness, and He is the One who will save you from yours.

And [mention] Ishmael and Idrees and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.
86وَأَدْخَلْنَاهُمْ فِي رَحْمَتِنَا ۖ إِنَّهُم مِّنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous.
And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
88فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.
89وَزَكَرِيَّا إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ
And [mention] Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors."
