Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Gham (الْغَمِّ): Intense distress, sorrow, and overwhelming hardship that envelops the heart and mind.
- Nunjī (نُنجِي): We save, deliver, and rescue from harm.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this blessed verse, Allah narrates the outcome of Prophet Yunus’s (peace be upon him) sincere supplication from the depths of darkness—the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the whale’s belly. When Yunus called out to his Lord with humility and submission, acknowledging his own shortcoming, Allah responded to his call and rescued him from that overwhelming grief and suffocating distress. He was cast out onto the open shore, weak yet safe, restored to life and purpose.
This verse carries a profound and universal promise: "And thus do We save the believers." It is not merely a historical account but a living, ongoing reality. Allah declares that just as He delivered Yunus from his trial, He will deliver every sincere believer who turns to Him in times of hardship. The condition is clear—true faith accompanied by supplication and trust in Allah alone. When the believer finds himself trapped in the darkness of trials, whether it be illness, poverty, fear, or oppression, and he raises his hands to Allah with a sincere heart, Allah’s mercy rushes to his aid. No distress is too great, and no darkness is too deep for the One who commands the seas, the winds, and the hearts of all creation.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a beacon of hope for every troubled soul. It teaches us that no matter how immense the trial may seem, Allah’s power to rescue is even greater. The story of Yunus (peace be upon him) is not just a tale of the past—it is a living promise for you and me. When you feel overwhelmed by the burdens of life, remember that the same Lord who heard Yunus’s call from the belly of a whale is listening to your call right now. He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. So, turn to Him with a sincere heart, acknowledge your weakness, and trust in His infinite mercy. Your relief is not a matter of "if" but of "when"—for Allah has promised, "And thus do We save the believers." Let this certainty fill your heart with tranquility and your life with hope. Islam is not a religion of despair; it is a religion of unwavering trust in the Most Merciful, who never abandons those who call upon Him.
