Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAlā ḥarf (عَلَىٰ حَرْفٍ): Literally means "on an edge" or "on a side." It refers to a state of instability, hesitation, and doubt—like standing on the edge of a cliff or the rim of something, not firmly established.
- Iṭmaʾanna (اطْمَأَنَّ): To be at ease, content, and settled.
- Fitnah (فِتْنَةٌ): Here it means a trial, test, or affliction—such as illness, poverty, or hardship.
- Inqalaba ʿalā wajhihi (انقَلَبَ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِ): To turn back on one's face—meaning to revert to disbelief after having embraced faith.
- Khusrān mubīn (خُسْرَانٌ مُبِينٌ): A clear, evident, and total loss.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Among people, there are those who enter the fold of Islam not with conviction and certainty, but with hesitation and instability. They worship Allah while standing on the very edge of faith—like a man perched on a mountain's rim, ready to fall at the slightest tremor. Their devotion is conditional, tied to the worldly comforts they hope to gain. If life treats them well—if they enjoy health, wealth, and ease—they feel content and continue their worship. But if they are struck by any trial—sickness, poverty, loss, or hardship—they quickly blame their religion and turn away from it, falling back into disbelief just as swiftly as a man topples over on his face.
Such a person loses in both worlds. In this life, their apostasy changes nothing of what Allah has decreed for them—they will not gain an extra share of provision, nor escape what was written for them. And in the Hereafter, they face the fire of Allah's punishment. This is the clearest, most evident loss—a loss that is total and unmistakable.
This person, in their weakness, worships other than Allah—things that can neither harm them if abandoned nor benefit them if worshipped. This is the furthest deviation from the truth. They call upon beings whose harm is closer than their benefit. How wretched is that protector, and how wretched is that companion!
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse paints a vivid picture of a heart that has not truly tasted faith. Faith is not a fair-weather friend; it is a firm anchor in the storm. Allah does not promise us a life free of trials—rather, He tests us to purify us, to raise our ranks, and to distinguish the truthful from the weak. When hardship comes, do not turn away from your Lord—turn to Him! For He is the One who removes harm, and He is the One who rewards patience with unimaginable bliss. The one who stands firm in faith, even amid trials, is the true winner—they gain the love of Allah, peace in their heart, and eternal success in the Hereafter. Do not be like the one on the edge—be like the one who plants their feet firmly in the garden of Islam, knowing that every test is a bridge to a greater reward. Allah says: "Indeed, with hardship comes ease" (94:6). So hold on to your faith, for it is your lifeline to eternal victory.
