Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ummatukum (أُمَّتُكُمْ): Your religion, path, or way of life — here referring to the shared creed and divine law.
- Ummatan Wāḥidah (أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً): One single religion/community — meaning one unified faith and one straight path.
- Fattaqūn (فَاتَّقُونِ): Fear Me, be conscious of Me, and guard yourselves against My displeasure by obeying My commands and avoiding what I have forbidden.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah addresses all the Prophets and Messengers — and through them, their followers — declaring that their religion is one and the same: Islam. This does not mean that the detailed laws differed from one prophet to another — indeed, some rulings varied according to time and circumstance — but the core of the faith, the foundation of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah), the worship of Allah alone, and the essential principles of righteousness have always been one single message. Every prophet, from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all), called to the same truth: submit to Allah alone, worship Him sincerely, and follow His guidance.
The verse then follows with a profound and direct statement: "And I am your Lord, so fear Me." This is a reminder that Allah is the only true Lord, the Creator, the Sustainer, the One who deserves all worship. And because He is our Lord, we owe Him our obedience, our reverence, and our mindfulness. The command to "fear Me" (taqwa) encompasses both the avoidance of sin and the performance of good deeds — it is a comprehensive call to live a life of God-consciousness in every moment and every action.
A Da'wah Reflection:
What a beautiful and unifying message this is! Allah is telling us that despite the differences in time, place, language, and culture, all believers are one family — one community — following one path that leads to one God. This is the essence of Islamic brotherhood: we are not divided by nationality, race, or social status; we are united by our submission to the One True Lord.
This verse also carries a gentle yet powerful call to every human being: your Lord is One, your religion is one, your purpose is one — so why divide yourselves? Why follow conflicting desires and false gods? The path is clear, the destination is noble, and the Guide is the Most Merciful. When you realise that the Creator of the heavens and the earth is your Lord, and that He cares enough to send prophets to guide you, how can you not respond with love, gratitude, and obedience?
Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your connection with Allah, to see yourself as part of this great chain of believers stretching across time, and to live each day with taqwa — conscious of Allah, mindful of His commands, and hopeful of His mercy. For when you fear Allah in this life, you find peace in your heart, and you secure the greatest success in the Hereafter.
